Value Village Speaker Find (Advents)

Super Member
Found these Advent speakers at the Value Village that I frequent.
I can't find any model numbers but they are 4 ohm speakers. And very heavy for their size.
The cabinets are a bit rough and of course the surrounds are shot so I have a bit of work to do.
I haven't even tried these yet, I hope everything works
I was very happy to find these :D:thmbsp:

I think those are the "smaller" Advents, 9 inch woofers?

If so, they are excellent speakers, a serious score!

The one piece of paper on the back says "The Small/Smaller Advent Loudspeaker"
I did test them out tonight and all the speakers work.
Took one of the woofers out and they are quite heavy with a square magnet
The speaker cones are 7 1/8" across and the outer edge of the surround is 8 11/16"

Nice score! I hope to hear a pair of these some day. Everybody loves them! Now to really up the anty, strip off the cheap vinyl veneer, and veneer them with real wood! Wait, it that real wood veneer on them now? Looks it in your pics.
Look forward to your listening impressions after the refoam.

Cheers!

I'm pretty sure Rick Cobb has the correct surrounds for the Smaller Advent.

I'm also pretty sure that's still the original Vinyl wrap on those and that's the only finish that was available on the Smaller Advents. I don't think anybody has veneered those. The grille cloth has been replaced or dyed. The original would have been the same light-colored fabric as on the original Advent loudspeaker.

They look pretty good and are well worth restoring. Good luck!

Thanks Guys !!!
I have 2 receivers that can handle the 4 ohm load. A Pioneer SX-636 and a big Toshiba (can't remember the model # offhand).
I don't know wood at all really so I'm not sure of the veneer. I'll let my Dad look at them and he'll be able to tell me.
Thanks for mentioning Rick for the surrounds. I was trying to remember who it was on Ebay that sold surrounds that everyone recommends but couldn't remember his name.

On a little sidenote here, Does Simply speakers sell just the surrounds?
All I seem to be able to find on their website is the surround kits.
I don't need the glue or the instructions, just the surrounds.

Give them a call. I have found their phone service to be excellent. Doubt if you save much $ though. I use their glue for a variety of purposes.

Yep, definitely the Smaller Advent, but those were only available in faux-wood vinyl, so if that is indeed real wood, someone has already administered a whole lotta TLC on those cabinets. And I suspect the grille cloth is also not original. (Opinion only: they look better with the beige off-white fabric).

The green tweeter version is the early version (near 1972), and I think the crossover has two caps of 8uF and 16uF values, which should be replaced. The cap values changed with the later red or orange tweeter. I get a lot of my foams from John at MSound (msound@shentel.net) including two pairs for these Advents. These were item no. SF-Adv9, described as 9" Advent surrounds, and run about $7.50 each for foam only. Please be sure to note that these foams are installed under the outer cone edge. Also, because this dust cap is so integral to the woofer performance, do not tamper with it. The voice coil gap is reasonably wide and these woofers do not require shimming - - the appropriate size foam will assist in centering the voice coil while gluing.

Thanks guys
There is no items for sale at MSound on Ebay right now so I may email him. I did notice that the foam was underneath the cone and I have done speakers like that before, so no problem there.
Thanks for the tip on the dustcap. I don't take them off anymore, I use a battery to center the voice coil.
It sounds like these are well sounding speakers. It will be interesting to hear them once they are repaired.

The veneer is the fake stuff, not real wood.
I did have one of the woofers out, and there is a ton of insulation in the cabinet.
Even the feed wires for the woofer have pink insulation wrapped around them.
I didn't take any out yet so I don't know what the crossover looks like.
Maybe if I get a chance this weekend I'll tear into them and see what's up.

Yeah, the faux wood is normal, but your pics in the first post made it difficult to discern. There's a whole pile of fiberglass insulation inside, so when you remove enough to get at the crossover, just be sure to keep speaker A in one bag and B in a separate bag so that you don't get it mixed up. For crossover reference, take a look at the thread I posted, and show us what's inside your cabinets.
