VARIAC DIM BULB TEST and HARMON KARDON 930 REBUILD

This is mainly a question re: Dim Bulb Tester. I was running a fully rebuilt HK 930 thru my Variac and Dim Bulb setup and all was fine at 120V and I was listening to a perfect receiver. After about 15 minutes the bulb flared and I quickly turned off the receiver. I can find no faults now or shorts anywhere on unit, but it acts like dead short now with speaker load. Crazy? Should I have disconnected DMM after I confirmed all was OK. ????
