Variac with ammeter and DBT

I frequently get Vintage amps and receivers from estate sale and would want a complete fool proof + safe powering up system for the same. Is variac + ammeter combined with DBT a good option ? Note that I already have a DBT but have to buy a variac. Can someone help me design this system ? What else do I need ? which variac should I buy ?

I don't work on tube stuff. I only work on SS amp and receivers....
