Vector Research - Nostalgia strikes again

I don't know if I was clear on this. The manual says 150mV input via Aux ports.
At that input level, when I tested for clipping, I couldn't make it clip. Power output was right at 65 watts. Volume turned all the way up.

I had to hit 250 mV on Aux input to get it to clip - clipped at 80 watts. I'm thinking they planned for some headroom.

I now have it playing thru some Cerwin-Vegas and no faults yet. Yea.

Thanks for the tips on the cassette player.
 
Update...

Something I didn't expect. I have a dedicated listening room upstairs and all of my equipment rotates thru there. Speakers stay the same, they don't rotate.

The room is too small for the speakers, but oh well.


I've never had really expensive TOL stuff, the best I've had in this room is the Marantz 250\3300 combo. Nice stuff there.
I'd show ya pics but I've just got a new PC and my pics... are not here right now, LOL.

So, the whole point is the VR-7000 is the best sounding of them all. I'm not going to try to describe why or how, I lack the words. But it's got great dynamic range, power and controls. All in one package. I've had it in that room, running out the Klipsch for months now. I really like it.

I'll come back and let you know when I take it out of rotation, I might have more to say then. :()
 
Nice find Dingman .I have a set of VR 123s in need of woofers atm. I let a friend borrow them and not sure where the 12s went lol .on a side note would you be interested in recapping a Yamaha m-65 NS amp. I have 2 down and out right now and in need of someone with your skills . Thanks for your time.
 
Nailed it. Those early analog-tuner VR 7000/5000 receivers sounded as good as any others out there at the time. Detailed, and with good dynamic range, they could have almost passed as “separates” in a blindfold test; indeed, I replaced a Dynaco PAT4/ST80 and tuner set for a 7000 and never looked back. Liked the midrange control, and the tuner section was good. That Vector receiver and a pair of Polk 10s got me through some lean years, until it probably got stuck in protection mode, which I used for an excuse to buy new Hafler stuff; I’m pretty I sent it (regretfully now) to the landfill.

Sorry, no.. I only do work for myself, friends and family. No money involved, so that way if it blows up they can't claim warranty (LOL, kidding).
But do goto the Yamaha forum here at AK and ask them - you will get several recommendations in short order, I'm sure. And good luck with that.

OMG, I was sucking up your post until the landfill part. Oh my.
But... I once trashed a vintage Toshiba (a big one) before I knew better. Been there, done that. So, I forgive you, LOL.

I did finally rotate the VR-7000 out and it's been sitting on a shelf ever since. I've recently been thinking about thinning out the shelves, but I won't be selling this one.

I appreciate it . Yeah I was spending sometime on AK Yammy threads for a while good folks there . On a side note found the VR 1230 12inch replacement woofers so they will be a quick fix and probably end up in the wood shop audio system lol
 
I just got a VR-7000 on eBay, shipping was a disaster, but everything is intact.

I have the VR-7000 hooked up to my KLH 5s, I was surprised how well everything worked together!

How much did the recap better the sound? (My listening room is a little small too)
 
Well, I partially “redeemed” myself for once throwing out a VR7000: Recently won a nice 5000 on eBay, and for a very decent price. The seller claimed he cleaned and DeoxIT-ed it and also installed new red bulbs in the tuner dial; not sure if any more was done to it. (I’d already found some of those cool matching rack handles for it.)
Paired with some re-capped EPI 70 speakers I also snagged, it does sound good. Wanted a receiver-based backup system to save hour usage on the vintage separates in my garage, listening mostly to background FM; this setup fills the bill nicely. Am now tempted to hook up a CD player or turntable - and maybe some larger speakers (although those little EPIs put out decent bass for their size) - for more-serious listening!
