Veneered plynth on Pioneer PL-518 and PL-516

So after viewing a few others' successful wood veneer jobs on their Pioneer turntables, I mustered the courage to re-veneer my PL-518 and PL-516 tables. Went with light walnut Howard's Restore a Finish for the 516 and used a darker Minwax mahogany stain for the 518.

I am a total clutz when it comes to this type of stuff, so if I can do it, anyone can. It's not a professional job by any means, but they look a heck of a lot better than their former selves. Apologies for the crappy pics...

Nice! I just picked up a 516 and the stock gray is awful. I think I may have your skillet or worse. Any tips that you can share?

Sure -- the old grey veneer peeled right off on my 516 with NO glue residue at all. The 518 was harder to pull off and had much more glue residue to sand down before applying new veneer. My Home Depot only had oak veneer for sale with self-stick glue on the back, so went with that. I used the old veneer pieces as a template for the new pieces, using an exacto knife for cutting. Then stain it to whatever color you desire. As far as adhering the new veneer to the plythn, I just used an iron which heats the glue on the veneer -- sticks very well. Very easy. Disassemby/reassembly of the table was easy -- just take your time -- matter of undoing a few screws really.
