Vestigial Tonearm

MRL_Audio

RIP 2022
I have a Transcriptor Vestigial tonearm in need of a rewire & repair. There is a needle bearing that has been sheared on one end. Other that that its in great shape and I'd really like to get it fixed. I have corresponded with Transcriptor in England and they indicated they can fix it but I would rather keep here in the states. Looking for suggestions on anyone that might tackle this here. Appreciate any thoughts or advice. Thanks for looking.

The bearing can be seen here.

I would guess a competent machinist could help you out. Or maybe you could simply replace both the pins and the bearings with different ones -- might be an improvement over stock.
The comments on the new Transcriptors company don't encourage one to send either components or money to them. Perhaps Michael Gannon's son has straightened out the problems, but be aware that there have been issues.
I used to lust after than arm, and I'd still love to find one, but I've sort of moved away from high compliance cartridges.

Have you tried J7 in Scotland? He's a regular over at the VE.

Having said that, I have a Vestigal is similar condition, but would rather have it redone locally as well.

I sent them an email with information about the arm. We'll see what response I get. Still not really what I am looking for. Hoping for a lead here in the US.

That didn't take long. Disappointing news on both counts from J7...

"hi M

don't send it to transcriptor

and i don't think i can sort it...last time i rewired one the arm guillotined the wires in transit

its a really tricky arm to send by post etc

I'm sorry i can't give u more help"

FWIW I ordered the needle bearing from Transcriptors and it arrived in the mail today. Exactly what I needed and in a timely manner. Cost was $25 pounds, about $37 US. Michael has been great to deal with on this and other items I needed to get my Skeleton up and running. I know there is some negative press but I have had nothing but positive dealings with him. Thought folks here would like to know.

That's good news! But it still has to be installed....I broke mine trying to remove it during a re-wire. Those set screws are very, very tight. :sigh:

Probablyloctite or some glue or something locking them. MEK or some solvent might help.
