Veterans Day Parades & Ceremonies

It's time for my annual plea for anyone who can attend, please consider attending a local Veterans Day Parade or Ceremony near you.

I am one of the volunteer photographers every year at the Detroit Veterans Day Parade, and it's heartbreaking to see thousands of veterans marching in the parade, and less than a hundred spectators. Especially when only a few short weeks later, a hundred thousand will show up for the Thanksgiving Day parade right down the exact same streets in Detroit. I get very depressed around this time of year, primarily due to that.

I hope to see many of you there! Semper Fidelis!

The annual parade here in Syracuse was also rather poorly attended. The November weather here in the sunshine capital of the Northeast probably had something to do with that. What they did was start an annual 'Veterans Expo' at the State Fairgrounds here. The parade is still held (with attendance about the same) but there are indoor booths set up by the VA, local politicians and other support groups. While there may not be a lot of community support at least the veterans may benefit a bit more than from just a parade.

I would blame the weather, but the fact of the matter is that the Thanksgiving Day parade happens a few weeks later, even worse weather, and hundreds of thousands show up, same route. All I can think is that people honestly don't give much of a crap about veterans. They *say* they do, but they don't.
