Vintage Altec 9849-8D Monitors

At my schools theatre we have a pair of Altec 9849-8D studio monitors that I found under a staircase full of dust. After dusting them off I found out that there are some small tears in the woofers, but despite that they sound amazing. Should I get them reconed? And what might such a pair of speakers be worth?

Definitely recone them! I'd say they could fetch anywhere from $500-1000 for the pair. I'd personally keep them though as I am heavily biased.
 
Lately, i listen to mine more often than any other speakers i own.

They'd be one of the last pair of Altecs i sold.

I hate to part with them, but we don't use them in our theatre much and could really use something a bit more powerful. Also, our budget is tight, so it would help us immensely.
 
probably best to let the new owners decide about the cone repair, your cost to re-cone won't be reflected in their resale value in most cases.

what they're "worth" will depend largely on exactly what vintage/driver load they have.

some 9849's have very rare tangerine equipped 806's in them which could earn a premium.

The easiest way to determine if they're tangerine equipped is to remove the driver from the horn and shine a flashlight into the driver throat, the orange plastic phase plug is easily visible if present.

If they have ferrite drivers, it becomes moot as they'd be 902's.
 
Keep them, give the school some money to get some 15" 2 way PA speakers like the cheaper JBL JRX or Yamaha Club series models and they'll be alright.

EDIT: sorry David, I should have read your post more closely. I thought initially you meant putting cheaper 15"ers in these as they are 12s. I see you meant cheaper monitors. My mistake. That makes good sense now.

I believe they are aluminum, or some other metal. I haven't looked too closely. I will update tomorrow when I can give them a closer look

Creative 16 yr olds without jobs can sometimes receive significant discounts from churches on old unused audio equipment. You need to say the right things to the right people.

+1. Keepitreel, Scrape together what you can, and/or buy some used PA speakers off CL and give them to the school in exchange. With willpower and determination and a little sweet talkin, they will become yours.

I am actually the crew head of our schools sound crew. If I wanted them, they'd be mine. Seeing as they were considered broken and antiquated until I actually got them working I would have no problem convincing the director to let me have them. However, I don't really want them. I know that probably comes as a shock. I'd rather let someone else enjoy them and get some money for our theatre.

I was in your position in high school (Class of '10), and given the chance I would have run straight out the door balancing both in my arms. Your devotion to your program is commendable, but I still think you should send a couple hundreds into the speaker kitty and enjoy them for yourself.
