Vintage AVR And Vintage Speakers

Hey Fam!

I have a crazy late night idea for a small room.

Currently I have a Sonos set up, I’m thinking about replacing the Sonos with some older tech such as a Denon AVR-2807

My idea, older AVR with pass through to go into my stereo amp, left and right channels that way I can listen to a decent stereo amp for music.

Speaker line up and Questions:

L&R: KLH 5s (no questions on these, they rock)

Center: a single KLH 6?

Surround: I have Dynaco A25s but the GF isn’t a fan of wall mounting them as they protrude pretty far out, as an alternative KLH 14S slims?

I already own KLH 5,6 and Dynaco A25s so the swap for the 14s would be quite a transition.

Has anyone done something like this?

The Denon 28xx series is pretty durn good for music all by itself.

More often than not, the preamp section of an AVR is what's lacking, not the amp section. This is especially true for higher end AVRs driving only stereo speakers.

Hey fam! Update!

I found a marantz sr5007 for a great deal!

I plugged in my KLH 5s as L & R and one KLH 6 as the center.

Tomorrow I am going to pick up some slimline KLH 14s as surrounds.

As of right now I am very impressed with the sound. I’ve been listening to tons of music and watched parts of Inception, Lord of the. Rings, and all of the Dark Knight. All I can say is I love KLH. Def a KLH fan boy.

I’ll report back once I have installed the 14s.

I run my Luxman R-113 preamp out into the CD input of my Denon AVR-2500 in pure direct mode and it sounds great. The best of both worlds. You can connect your music devices to the stereo receiver and any surround devices into the AVR for 5.1. It also gives you volume control if you have a remote for the avr.

So!

I posted on reddit, about subs, and got overwhelming support for dual Rythmik L12s.

my space is small, 12x12x8. But I feel like I’ll be able to grow into these subs.

As always I’ll keep updating until the final build.

My goal is to rent some quality mics and record properly to showcase the sound that this set up has to offer. I either want to go binaural or high quality mics that my friends own, and of course record at the highest quality level possible.
