vintage chrome score..

finally scored these chrome classics from my early teens
these were some stylish tapes to have back then..even the name 'chromdioxid II' had a certain kudos in the school playground :D
popping them into my akai gx-52 today after 20 odd years..
well..
they still sound excellent..no drop outs..crystal clear sound...surely one of the quietest chrome tapes ever made ?:scratch2:

any recent vintage tape scores out there ?

I found an unopened 2-pack of TDK D60's with a contest entry from 1986 today. Also, a couple dozen Maxell C30 P/I Communicator Series, unopened, which may be handy for the 4-track. I've never seen the BASF's you found, but I find the BASF Ferro Extra's fairly regularly, about 50% unopened.
 
cool score :thmbsp: i still have a couple of those early type tdk d90's with the greyish/black casing..never seen the maxell's you mention..:scratch2: but here's a maxell relic which i also found recently..still unused
i think i have a single basf ferro extra from the same era as the chromes..(yellow cassette label with red highlight band)..will keep my eyes peeled for some as the one i have sound decent for a ferric..

I don't recognize your Maxell pic so we're even. The BASF's I find have a red/black silver label. The cassette body itself is clear with white lettering and red directional arrows on the tape path. Yours look like what, late 70's?
Saw some a while back like that but figured they'd be too old to use.
 
i think the chromdioxid II above were from approx '83 onwards :scratch2: with the exception of the one on the right which might be a year + earlier ...the version below is possibly from the late 70's i think..
the tape in this had suffered from poor storage but the shell & case were too cool to throw..:D so some tdk sa90 tape hides inside..
maybe post a pic of your haul if you have time..:scratch2:

I picked up two boxes of these recently. Kinda cool. Never used, and all still purty ...

Basf made a number of chrome formulations over the years. The early ones with the small windos had terrible cases, and many decks would tend to eat. The later large window cases ran quite smoothly. My favorite was the pro-II chrome. For whatever reason these sounded best in my cassette deck back then. The later Chromium dioxide IIs didn't impress me nearly as much.

Funny that! I got a stock of the very first BASF Crome tapes when they first appeared in London sometime early 70s, with an early dolby Akai deck - GXC65D? ( the one that turned the tape over to play side two). The Akai has long gone but the tapes are still working perfectly! They have "SM" mechs and are all c120s as well! Apart from some HF dropout they still perform very well.

I also think the later Chrome super 11s dont impress - limited HF and they suffer from HF dropout. Pity, because I picked up 200 of these things last year!!
