This Bentley's original owner was no less than Sir Keith Richards (well, he should be knighted, since Mick was) which explains the 'limo tint' privacy glass which wasn't common in the 1960s as it is now.

Once had to test-drive a Gemballa Avalanche several times... in the process of repairing/testing its proprietary digital gauges, damaged by an electrical event. Car had been seized from a convicted murderer as I recall, or maybe drug dealer - it was a longtime ago. We did the repairs for the new owner after the feds resold it.

Car had a turbo in it the size of a dinner plate, maybe 500 HP - I believe Ruf-built. Talk about being thrown back in the seat... I like fast cars but that thing ripped so fast from the onset of boost to redline that it scared the crap out of me.

Web image (the one I drove was pretty close to this, pearl white):

We did learn in the process that you can reset the odometer by carefully tapping a live test light probe against the case of the speedo... had to put something on it after the gauge reset due to the electrical problems (regulator went out so it was charging at a ridiculously high voltage). That was an interesting project that almost cost me a new pair of pants.

I had the honor of selling the last production Porsche 930 back around 1977 when they "discontinued" the model—before returning the 2nd generation to the line-up just a year or so later. The originals had the single KKK turbo and 4-speed manual transmission. They could almost do 0-60mph without a shift, almost! The turbos were so slow and crude that you'd step on the gas and sometime next week the car would finally explode with what—at that time—felt like an omnipotent amount of power. The lag was so incredible that when it finally caught, the surge felt just that much more powerful. SAABs were similar in that nascent technology of turbo aspiration. Today there are many 4-cylinder cars that will make both look slow.

I know you're talking about a slant-nose Gemballa version but the original 930 had a whopping 256-hp and a 0-60 time of just a tick under 5-seconds. Not difficult to find econoboxes today that can equal that with current turbo technology that still makes them feel slow by comparison to the turbo-lag of the old-school turbo cars. Those were the good-old-days of European performance after years of EPA-required slugs. Even BMW was no better with the 2002 turbo, the first European production turbo car, introduced in 1973. My dual-side-draft 45DCOE Weber Korman-built 2.3L 4-cylinder 2002 performs better and with more horsepower—with no lag!

Enzo was famously quoted to declare the E-type the most beautiful car ever built, and none would ever surpass it. High praise from a guy known to not be so gracious about his competition. Of course he was referring to the FHC version pictured, not the drop top.

Since you've touched upon the German Karosseries, here are a couple of mine from Baur in Stuttgart:
(Little known fact that every Porsche 959 was constructed by Baur!)

Actually, my photo links are tied up in PhotoBucket so these are not my actual cars but similar.

I grew up in California, Euro GTs were everywhere back then. All the below are minor pre-86 personal brushes with greatness -

I had the opportunity to buy one of these (running but unrestored) in the mid-80s for $2500. We'll see if anyone can guess what it is (answer at bottom if not) -

My aunt had a BMW 3.0CSa and eventually sold it to a moderately famous ball player. I got to drive it many times, it was a slug and likely why I got to drive it -

My cousin had one of these, man that thing was cool and it flew (Lambo Espada) -

My half sister's dad had one of these, Lambo 400GT, he putted around in it. (Much later he had a 911 Targa w/ Chevy V8 conversion, it screwed.) -

My sister's BF had one of these, De Tomaso Pantera. It was scary (to me then) fast -

A friend's dad had an early Countach and he took me out in it a few times, noisy but cool and everyone looked at you -

The car at the top is an ASA 1000 GT coupe. Whenever I get the "Do you have any regrets?" question, there is the answer.
