Some second hand record store (very cool place in a verrrrrryyyyy scary part of town) some how got their hands on a crap ton of vintage gear - most in not great condition but some in serviceable condition to few in what could be great condition with a bit of TLC. It looked like most of the stuff languished and was dirty from dust and time but not water.
They told me the original idea was to post the stuff on ebay for "fair market value" and when they realized it would take too much time they said, "screw it, everything is $20.00 each.
The best way to describe the lay of the land is it was basically like museum basement for vintage audio. It was all covered in tons of dust and preserved untouched for decades. They may have gotten a truck load of the stuff but they were very careful to stack the equipment on top of each other haphazardly in the exact same way they must have found it.
It was truly amazing. Its the audio equivalent of a Barn Find.
I originally went for a Sony STR-6060 and had them put it aside for me. I didn't realize what I was getting my self into!!
The Sony looks to be in good condition but is just dirty. I plan on running through it soon enough. Price: $20.00
I then found a Marantz 2215B that was actually clean(ish) compared to all the other stuff that was there. It turned on and the guy who was in charge of making sure the stuff at least turned on, saw what did and didn't work and priced the stuff said that there was no sound to the headphones but he "really didn't look that hard" and said the speakers terminals probably work but there were no speakers to connect them too. (I'm not kidding they could have given 2 shts about what they were selling. and these were relatively knowledgeable folks. They sold vintage vinyl, they knew what a Marantz was. they, and this is a quote "just want it all out as fast as we can get it out the door before we move.") Price: $20.00
Lastly but certainly not least is the Kenwood KR9600 (receiving the coveted ClassicReceivers.com 2013 1st and only annual runner up award for The Most Powerful Vintage Receivers of All Time, truly a great honor).
I almost didn't see it since stuff was camouflaged under layers of dirt. This unit was on its side facing away from the super cramped aisle. As you can see from the pics, the case was not screwed on (sadly this was due to no screws) and the speaker terminal was smashed. The face and glass look ok. Christ. So. Much. Dust. This one excites me the most. All the caps look to be "ok" and none are bleeding. If i can get it working and cleaned up....holy cow. Price: $275.00.
Just kidding $20.00.
If memory serves, as I was walking out the door with 100 lbs worth of vintage audio receivers i turned around and all i saw was smoke and the place had disappeared.......
