vintage Mcintosh tube tuner - worth it?

Funny you should post this. I just traded my dad's MR55 two days ago to a fellow AKer. It came with a Fisher X202B amplifier and here's the part that might interest you...The Fisher amp had an add on separate unit, XB(I think) 200 that turned the mono signal into stereo. They were built right around the time stereo was just coming into being and were designed to allow for upgrading to stereo with the addition of these multiplex units. Several companies made the multiplexers. They are great old tube units and well worth the asking price you mentioned.

Nothing wrong with mono.
As long as it has a detector output (which it probably does - I dunno, though) you could add an MPX decoder if you really wanted to. I'd opine that great mono is better than meh stereo, though.

I don't follow the vagaries of McIntosh pricing, but 200 smackers for any Mac vacuum tube tuner in good working condition sure doesn't seem unreasonable.

i thought the most enjoyable Tuner to listen to was my MR55A in mono...or simply with a Y adapter to stereo...very coherent sound.

The only standalone Fisher multiplex decoder was the MPX-100, outside of a rather oddball unit that was made for use in their stereo consoles with mono tuners. I can't think of the name of that one off the top of my head.
