I recently picked up a set of Original Large Advents (OLA) with the masonite woofers. One of the woofers needs a new surround. The original owner mentioned that he's replaced them several times and didn't want to go through that again and wanted to downsize. The fact that he's had to do this multiple times is concerning to me. I've got several questions for anyone with experience or knowledge.
Are all of the replacement foam surrounds for the OLA's (with masonite woofers) created equal?
Can anyone point me toward or away from any replacements that are going to last? (Chemical makeup or simply experience.)
Also, I hear that the OLA's with the masonite woofer had a larger surround in millimeters than the model with the metal basket. How do I identify if the dimensions are correct in the replacements? What do I look for? I see at least one supplier selling a set that fits both the masonite and metal speakers. I wonder if this is wise or if it is ok?
Thanks for any help. I just want to do a repair and restoration on these that is going to last and doesn't negatively impact the results.
