Vintage receiver with preamp?

I just recently purchased an awesome Sansui 9090DB. I've never had "separates" my entire life (preamp, amp, tuner etc) but am curious if there would be any benefit to running a tube preamp with this awesome receiver? Be nice. I'm just getting back into the swing of things with my vintage audio gear and am re-learning everything I've forgotten (or most likely never knew) over the last 40 years. Thanks!

Maybe a tube phono pre would be the better option. :dunno:

This would also allow trying LOMC cartridges if you go that route, also different loading options.

The advantage of using any preamp with this receiver is it removes the troublesome Dolby circuit from the signal path. The amp is the best part of this receiver, so using it as an amp is a good choice. Using a tube preamp, however is an exercise in futility, because tubes get noisier with age and you will be forever replacing tubes.

I use my Nikko STA-7070 as the pre-amp for the other gear: from the pre-amp output into the EQ and out into the tube amp. It works and sounds great.
