Yeah, good idea. I think some ppl (especially those new to the hobby) are intimidated by the sometimes cynical responses. Really, it's hard to tell how good a newbie's skills are, without knowing what other DIY project he/she has done. :idea:

It just rubs me wrong when people try and scare the newbies away, we all started somewhere, and as I mentioned I have never heard of tube amp kits going on a killing spree. How many of those where put together by “clueless” people and still work fine today?

It’s cool to talk about the hazards but all the scary talk is not needed.
 
The part I disagreed with was "the retarded technology of tube gear". Really? Also, point to point is a plus in my book. Easy to work on. Granted, there are some dangers present that those of who are familiar with tube equipment understand. For a complete "newbie" some research and education is warranted. @Mikethenewb would attest to when I kinda showed him the ropes.

My first DIY, was this old Heathkit tube shortwave radio. Worked well for years. I never used a soldering iron before that kit. Summer science project between 5th and 6th Grade.

But, I do think it is important for a newbie to gather basic circuit knowledge, prior to trying to fix something. It'll help not only with the fix, but ferreting out bad online information from good. There is so much poor "hot-rodding" and "marvelous mods" on the Net.

That’s why I always recommend a Dynco something if the funds are available and advise rebuilding if completely via the great assembly manual.
