Vintage Sony Receivers 60XX-70XX

Hello, this is my first thread so I'm a newbie. I'm interested in hearing peoples opinions on Sony receivers that range in the 60XX and 70XX series. Has anyone had any experience with them. I currently have an STR 7015. I love it great warm deep bass and clean treble. I was looking at an STR 6055 and a STR 7065 and not sure how it would compare. Both are in good condition.

Sony's from this era are exceptional. I grew up with a 6050. Now have a recapped 6065. wonderful sounding receiver.

7065 would be my pick. though 6055 is no slouch. Get whichever one is in best shape or both.

I have a 6060 and it's quite nice. Detail for days and some oomph despite it not being a big watt monster.

I can get the 6055 for around 70. It doesn't have the wood case and the main dial light is out. The faceplate looks to be in good shape. Guy says it works. I wouldn't mind recapping the whole thing either. Would it sound better than the 7015?

I would think so but sound is so subjective. Bett components, build, higher output...

TOTL the very best of the series was the 6200F, followed closely by it predecessor, the 6120. The 6060FW was their first all-out effort and also close to the top but only 45 wpc vs 60 wpc for the 6200/6120.

These are mid-60s to early 70s machines so there are likely some maintenance issues to be seen.

The 7065 has a little more power and a lot more bling but the tuner section is only 4 gang compared to the 5 gangs in the 6060/6120/6200. However, a good example of the 7065 is MUCH easier to come by although there have been a couple 6060s on the auction sites lately.

I own a 6060FW, a 6200F and a 7065 plus a spare 6200F for parts or refurbishment.

Any of them make highly competitive sound compared to other receivers and many separates. You can be proud to have any one of them in your system.

The STR-7065 is what I had up to the last Thanksgiving when I gave it to my brother inlaw as a nice gift. I really like the tube sound this SS receiver has much like a Pioneer SX-9000 I had also. Was a great time for Sony in build as well as looks.

Sony 6120 Owner

I have a Sony STR 6120 and I find it to be my favorite over a couple of Yamaha receivers and Dyna SC80 s that I also use frequently. My feeling of substantiveness of the sound it produces through AR 3a s may be somewhat biased by just how massive the receiver is.

Unfortunately the right channel of the Sony blew, probably the when speaker wires shorted during an ill advised speaker location adjustment. I could not find any indication of circuit protection against output shorts, although I certainly could have missed it. Until told otherwise, I would be extra cautious about avoiding anything like a short in the output. [Yes I know that's a good idea anyway and yes I am embarrassed at my clumsiness. However, I do have lot of trouble keeping AR terminal nuts tightly fastened and wires will slip.]

I think being able to replace the output transistors should be a consideration in buying a vintage SS receiver. I don't know if there is any difference in robustness or transistor replacement availability among the 6000 and 7000 series Sonys, but I am sure someone on this forum could add something about this.

By the way, replacing the two output SD88s in the damaged channel with NTE 87s produced plenty of volume but low sound quality, so I will be seeking help on this issue.

Make sure it works!
I think a refreshed 6055 should be better than a 7015. The 7015 is the bottom of its series and the 6055 is just below the the top of a more discrete series.
