Vintage SS Power Amps...

Let me throw another vote in for the HK vintage x30 line. I've got an HK 730 here also. While I don't have Klipsch legacy speakers, I thought the HK sounded pretty damn good with my Klipsch RF-3's!
 
If I were running Klipsch speakers I think I would use the Mc2505 (Mcintosh) amp. Autoformers makes it mate well with about anything and with Klipsch its a magical match. The 2505 is 50wpc has the blue meters and the gorgeous glow in the dark face illumination.

Nice to look at nice to listen to . Priced right too. I had my hands on one a month ago in vg condition with a wood case for 250.00.

What more is there?

And the C28 pre amp will go with it Very Nicely later on down the road. Also reasonably priced.....

I don't know which amp is the best, but I would look for a DC amplifier from input to output. This type of amp will give you the best bass response.

$500 gets you almost anything you want in vintage power amps, except for some of the truely rare items (Sansui BA-5000s and the like). How about a Pioneer Spec 2, or Spec 4? Yamaha M2 or M4? Hafler DH-200 (or is it 220?) or even a DH-500? With luck even an Accuphase P-300 can be had for under $500 on eBay. Lots of choice out there.
 
Auditioned a friend's Spec-1/Spec-2 combo today. Absolutely georgeous condition but Not the right combo with my Heresys! We couldn't find a CD in my collection that didn't sound almost Metalic, especially in the midrange. It might have been somewhat better with vinyl, but my TT is dead so we couldn't try that. I would still love to own a similar combo just for their appearance, but not for use in this system.
 
My vote will be for a tandberg 10xx series receiver. Just wonderful sounding stereos, granted this does not qualify as an amp but it has jumpers and can be used as an amp. Very mellow sounding with just about everything, though I like the HK 430 with the hereseys the tandbergs are a notch above that.

I had actually thought about Tandberg when I was shopping for a receiver. My dad is a big fan of Tnadberg gear so I have heard quite a bit of it. Never could find anything reasonably priced though.
 
Ok. We have been playing with the Spec-1/Spec-2 combo all afternoon and as I previously posted, I didn't particularly care for the sound with my Heresys. It sounds absolutely Great with his Advent speakers, though. We now have his Spec-1 Preamp playng through the power amp section of my H/K730 and it sounds noticeably better. Still not satisfied, but it is a noticeable difference. We are about to try the preamp outs from the H/K through the Spec-2 to see how that works. It's been an interesting afternoon. It is pretty obvious how this gets so addictive!

Well, at the end of my first day of experimenting with seperates, I have learned this:

1: it is a lot of fun
2: The Spec-1/Spec-2 combo is a Very nice looking set!
3: Above gear doesn't sound very good in my room through my speakers.
4: The Spec-1 pre/H/K730 power amp section combo sounds a bit better.
5: The H/K730 Pre section/Spec-2 combo sounds about the same as the Spec-1/Spec-2 combo.
6: this is a lot of fun!

Unfortunately i do not, I have had one and sold it, kickin myself ever since, one of the very nicest units i have ever heard!!!!!!
