Cactus Cowboy.....Holy Crap Man!!!! You do have the sickness!!! I thought I was kickin' ass with over 1k albums, but you just made me very excited, and repulsed at the same time!!! Hope your floors are reinforced for the load.
Funny, my wife uses the term "sickness" as well.
The shelves in the second photo are wall mount, supported by steel brackets that I fabricated and welded. I used some substantial lag bolts going into the studs. There's about half a ton of LPs in that shelf. All the LPs (approx. 2,500) in that photo were acquired in 2007 and are in the process of being cleaned.
The other shelves are sitting on a concrete floor. With the exception of that little 2 level shelf, they're all bolted to the wall for safety.
The small 2 level shelf is made from a dresser I bought at a yard sale for $5.00. I knocked out the supports for the first and third drawers, and painted it white. I cut some pieces of 3/4" Melamine to size for the two shelf bottoms. It holds about 250 LPs. I've got my Childrens LPs and a few dozen Soundtracks in there.
Do you actually manage to listen to all of them? That looks like it is starting to approach the limit for what one can listen to in a life time.
Cool, I just read through that and that Answers some of my questions although it makes some more for me. Being as cheep as I am I am going to be using excel (unless there is something better out there that is free) And for cataloging I am more looking for what Information I should use. Things like album title and artist are standard but I am just curious if I should do years, songs, play time and other such things (I plan on doing condition so I can keep track of what to buy to get a nicer one).
For a spreadsheet, use OpenOffice, which is FREE.
And there is a FREE database program called MySQL.

IMHO the best pieces for storing vinyl are the Expedits from Ikea. They are inexpensive, look good and are very sturdy. Its like they were made for records. You can even customize them if you want by attaching legs or back pieces.

You might wish to list the catalog number, what variation of that number it is (label variations, etc. affect value), the condition (I use the Goldmine grading system), what you paid for it, and it's value. That could be very useful for insurance purposes. I also list where and when I got it.
Just an FYI, the Expedits are only rated for 29 lbs/shelf. I'm not sure how many disks you can get on one shelf, but I am willing to bet it's more than 29 lbs. Multiply the overage by a lot of shelves, and it could be problems.
I hadn't heard about a shelf rating, I wonder if that's per "cube". I use several large Expedits for vinyl storage, they work great, defintely seem up to the task unlike standard bookshelves...
