Vishay Capacitors

Yet another recapp posting.I strugled here in the UK to find the right capps for the coupling and mains capp for my Marantz 1060, but with help from AK members I managed to find the nearest equivalent. Coupling caps used where Vishay 63v 10000uf 35mm and the mains cap 80v 4700uf but only 35mm diameter, had to pack it with pipe insulation inside the cap holding bracket. I hope the Vishay capacitors are reliable, couldn't find any information on vishaycapps on the net. The amp sounds brilliant after the recap, better highs and fantastic base.

Vishay is a very well regarded manufacturer, they should be plenty good and reliable.

Avoid buying parts on e-bay, apparently many fakes are being sold.
If I use another diameter than the originals, I order clamps of the right size for the new caps.
Still better, I like to use caps that match the original size, which means usually going up in voltage rating, and where appropriate going up in capacitance.

Hi Bert, Well I hope mine are genuine Vishay, because I did buy them of ebay, How would one tell if they where made in China or not? they sound good and look perfect. ( time will tell )The only differance from the old caps is, Ive noticed the volume on the 1060 has to be turned higher now. Yes I would have liked the mains cap to be the same size as the bracket, but couldnt find one. Can you recomend a capps suplier in the UK Bert? I have another 1060 which I will recap.

In the UK I've used hificollective for more exotic parts like Mundorf caps.
Otherwise suppliers like Mouser, Digikey, Farnell.
Orders from Mouser and Digikey ship free from 50 euros, when I order from them the order gets to me in Switzerland within 3 to 5 days via DHL.
With my rebuilds I usually use Elna Silmic II for the small caps (less than 1000uf), Wima MKS2 or Panasonic ECW or ECQ for films to replace small value (2.2 uF or less) electrolytics, and Nichicon LKG for the big caps.

A couple of my Marantz rebuilds, you might find some useful info :

Marantz 1060
Marantz 2220

You can see I like to use 4-pole caps for the main filter caps, I find the sound is more 3D with them. But it makes it more complicated and you have to work out the proper way to wire them in.

Thanks for your help and information Bert, The volume isnt that much differant than before the recap, I just noticed it and it was all with the same equipment. When I come to do the other 1060 I will try your suggestions, yes I would feel happier with the mains cap being the same diameter as the original and it would look better. Not used 4-pole caps before, will look into rewiring them. Im of for a weeks holiday in the morning, will miss playing my vintage equipment, but when I come back will start the recap. Regards Rob
