Visiting Sacramento from North Dakota

mjennens

Old Guys Rule!!!
I'll be visiting Sacramento in August for a few weeks and I'm hoping I can get some pointers on some good places to go as far as audio, especially vintage and DIY. I'm not sure how much time I'll have; I'll be there for a military school. I'm from North Dakota, so I'm looking forward to the "big city" visit (at least for a while; too much traffic is one of my least favorite things!).
I hope to find some stores that sell audio DIY kits and DIY speaker parts (budget stuff, maybe). Maybe some decent thrift stores or the like. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks.

Yikes.. Sacramento in August. I can't tell you were to shop, but make sure you take shorts and an air conditioner. The city is "big" in more than one way. It's spread out over seemingly miles and miles. There are couple of Sacto guys here and I'm sure will help answer some of your questions.

If you can sneak of to San Francisco about an hour or so west. It will be like night and day. Plus tons of places to shop and explore.

Have fun!

Hopefully the smoke will clear by August. Smoke is thick as cloud now. I'm already wanting to get out of Sacramento and out of state. Fire won't let up for the last few weeks. :grumpy:

Speaking of audio, I find there are some audio store in Roseville about 15 - 20 miles east of Sacramento. I don't know where exactly but I found it through McIntosh website's dealer location. Of course, it's not vintage. I don't know where there's a good vintage shop in Sacto. I'd like to know about it. :D

classicaudio.com is in Carmichael, just outside of sacto.

Not only will you need shorts, but a good gas mask would surely help. I am beginning to go nuts being trapped inside because of all this smoke.

I would take onepixel's advice and go the City, cooler, no smoke, and tons more to do.

I think so, I picked up a Pioneer receiver from Tim a few months back and he was happy to show me around. A phone call would let you know for sure.

I'd look for some night clubs that have good blues or jazz. I live in a small dot of a town and when I go to a city that's my first look.

Marcia Ball is playing in Winters on Aug 8, which isn't too far from Sac. I'd think there are lots of places for live music in and near Sacramento.

Hi Mike,
If you can make a 90 mi or so drive N from Sac there are a lot of great thrift stores in Chico (a few in Oroville too). I lived in Chico 9 years and just relocated to Dallas. A kind of hippy/college laid back town and I scored lots of great deals on some very good condition stuff there. Also found a lot of obscure vinyl there as well. It’s also home to the Sierra Nevada brewery (great beer!). Very eclectic line up of shows also at Cal State Chico’s Laxson Auditorium. http://www.csuchico.edu/upe/performance/bydate.html.
BTW my folks grew up in Grand Forks.

If you make it up closer to Beale AFB (Yuba City?) there's (or at least was) a store called "Happy Daze". Great lil' hippy record store. The couple that owned the place were pretty awesome as well. They still get some 78s in on occasion even.

Yikes.. Sacramento in August...

...for a few weeks.

Like Carl said, brace yourself for very warm weather conditions re: Sacramento in August. I think that the fires will have subsided by August. Lots of thrifts and a couple of vinyl-selling independent record stores in Sac, too. State Capitol building is interesting to see and try to get out to see Folsom State Prison if you get a chance. An historically significant place, musically and, um, otherwise.

Wow, thanks for all the info. I'll be in the southeast area, off Fruitridge Rd., near the old Army depot. It sounds like I'll have plenty of places to visit if I get the time. COOL!!!!!

As far as the heat, I'm not looking forward to it at all. Being military I had the "privilege" of living in some pretty substantial heat a couple of years back; as high as 140 degrees. NASTY HOT! Still, when it's over 90 degrees it's too hot for me, and then count in the humidity....:tears:
BTW, I've had people pull the cliche on me, "Oh, but that's a DRY heat over there, isn't it?" Um, maybe. But so is an oven. So turn the oven to 140, stick your head in there for a day or two....:screwy:
However, with all that said, it was an experience I wouldn't trade.

Thanks again for the info. Keep it coming.
Mike
