Visiting San Francisco -- recommendations for good vinyl shops?

I used to near where you're staying, first on Golden Gate @ Larkin and later on Post @ Polk. Definitely a sketchy neighborhood, so be on your guard at night.

Some great, cheap Vietnamese restaurants along Larkin Street though.
 
Even if you don't get to this side of the Bay, good having you here and enjoy yourself. Try some Ghirardelli's chocolate and some sour dough bread from Boudin Bakery. You'll enjoy both.

Funny, I had a similar experience peering into the window while waiting for the wife.

+2 for Amoeba on Telegraph. Probably not in the cards but I'd choose that one over the SF store.
 
Turns out I will be visiting the Berkeley campus on Sunday, so hopefully I have an opportunity to check out a store or two.

You'll see two, Rasputin's and Amoeba. Like beatcomber said just down the street. They're a minute walk out of Sather Gate.
 
There are 3 large record stores in a block. Rasputin’s used collection is at Mad Monk just across the street on Telegraph and Haste - you’ll want to check it out.
 
Went to Mad Monk and Amoeba in Berkeley yesterday. Prices in the Berkeley Amoeba store seemed to be cheaper than in the SF store. Kinda aggravating - I saw the same album for which I paid $18 at the SF Amoeba location in almost equally good shape for $5. Similarly, I saw a new album I bought for $30 at the SF Amoeba store for $25 at Mad Monk. I may go back tomorrow and see if I can exchange both.
I'm looking forward to checking out the parking lot sale at Down Home Music tomorrow.
 
Last time I was in the Bay Area, I went to Amoeba and Rasputin among others; my favorite store,
bar none, was Dave's Record Shop in Berkeley. Great folks, and quality over quantity.
 
If you're going to the East Bay you should also stop at 1234 Go! Records on 40th St. in Oakland. They run a small record label and also have a small venue at the record store. They have a garage, indie, punk, hardcore, etc. bent if that floats your boat.
 
In SF, I also like Aquarius Records on Valencia and Rooky Ricardo's in the lower Haight. Both definitely worth checking out.
 
I love Down Home. Excellent record store with a focus on Americana. They have a deep selection with lots of obscure and raw stuff. Weekend warrior type musicians that are/were just really talented at what they did. Their Arhoolie label has introduced me to some excellent low-country/delta blues and soul artists. Almost archival/anthropological kind of stuff in a Smithsonian Folkways kind of way.

Arhoolie Records actually became part of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings in 2016,
