VMPS RM/2, UP and Running

A few months ago, my son dragged home a set of VMPS RM/2 speakers along with a pair of B&K amps and a B&K preamp. Just got around to hooking them up for a listen. For today, I hooked them up to a Pioneer Sx-650 I had handy, set the pots on the speakers to flat, and let it rip. My oh my, these sound really good. I haven’t tuned the passive radiator, run them in biamp mode, or experimented with placement yet, but if it gets better from here I’m sold. For as big and imposing as they are, they offer a very delicate presentation. I think they’ll be sticking around for a while!

Are those infinity Emit-R tweeters? They sure look like it, didn't know Cheney used them

the mids look like B/G

very nice!

No, not emits, from my research they seem to be spiral ribbon tweeters. Here is a closer picture of the tweeter.

yup, that's an Emit-R tweeter. No infinity branding on it anywhere? interesting.

and here's one in an Infintesimal IV, so it doesn't have the 'normal' faceplate.

That's an awesome find. I'd love a set of RM-2's.

Your pair are 2nd generation. An earlier version, with Bohlender/BG Radia mids came first. The dual spiral ribbon "Emit" tweeters came next, followed later, by a version with a single FST ribbon tweeter, an Aurum Cantus G2Si.

The final mid panels were made by Sonigistix, a Canadian company, from a design licensed through Eminent Technology. They marketed the planar mid panels through their Monsoon brand. They were used in both computer and home speakers.

The 12" carbon fiber woofers, were custom designed by Brian Cheney, and built by Misco Speakers. The exact same 12" woofers and down firing passive radiators, were even used in Brian's Original Subwoofer. So, you should get exceptional bass performance from your speakers, once tuned!

Enjoy!

Thank you everyone for the wealth of information. I read through the setup instructions posted online, and I knew that tuning them, achieving proper placement and getting them biamped would be a time consuming task. Time that I just didn’t have yesterday. Hence, the quick listen with the Sx-650. Does anyone know which foam I should use to replace the strips that line each side of the tweeters? It’s becoming soft and gooey.

Oh, one other diffraction foam possibility, is Sonic Barrier. It's a damping foam, sold by Parts Express. They have a 1/2" foam, that should be the correct thickness. You could cut it into strips, of the correct length, and stick it on, as it has an adhesive backing.

Hi...can you tell me which foam you ended up using? My foam also dry-rotted on these...
