VMPS Super Tower/R - a worthy find?

I have access to a pair of VMPS Super Tower/R speakers. There are the normal issues with these - need new foam for the drivers but the cabinets seem to be OK. Appear to be heavy units; maybe 200 LB each.
Who has these, or at least experience with them. What amount of power does one need to make these come alive? What issues should I be aware of before snagging these?
If these end up coming home with me, I'm going to have to shed some other boxes, probably my Altecs (806A & 416-15). What's a fat little white boy to do?

VMPS never seems to have gained the public notice that they deserve, perhaps because they didn't go through conventional retail routes.
Obviously the answer ought to be to listen to them, but that's hard to do without refoaming them. That might make them cheap to buy, but it makes them a big heavy problem if once you get them up and running, you don't like them. But I suspect you will them fine -- there is something about really big speakers that tends to overwhelm small objections. Perhaps its the size and clarity of the bass they can develop.
If you get them, please post your impressions.
 
I own VMPS but not that model, they are likely worth the effort and as noted above the run under the radar due to a non traditional sales model that isnt dealer network driven but Brian Cheney's speakers have won best in show and are known for killer bass and honest presentaion. there is a VMPS owners club at audiocircle.com so a wealth of knowledge may be found there.

The individual who has them belongs to our local stereo group (NEWAS - Northeastern Wisconsin Audiophile Soc). They were going to be tossed our by his father-in-law due to cone problems and he scooped them up several years ago. Jump to the present - they have been sitting in the basement collecting dust and our member has visions of building an AV room; doesn't know if he want to invest the coin to restore them or not. He has no real price listed, more just interested in offers to see what he can get. VMPS has quoted a price of about $700 to restore the drivers and the like. He is just not sure where to go with these. At this point, I believe that he is weighing his options.
I already have way too many pairs of speakers as it is (currently working on two pair of DQ-10) and don't actually need another pair of big speakers (have B&W 808), but that aspect hasn't stopped me from following something like this in the past.
I think we are all waiting to see which way the wind blows.
 
The BW 808 is a great speaker so not too sure if its gonna be worth it for you to get yet another set of speakers you admit you dont need but as a VMPS owner and a guy experienced with the 808 it would be interesting if you ever did a shootout and see what you think.
 
That would be me, errr...was me. The speakers belonged to my brother-in-law, otherwise the info above pretty much sums it up.

Someone came up tonight, checked them out, gave me cash and carted them off. He promised to fix them up this summer and I hope he does! He said he's on this forum too so I won't share what he paid, he can offer that info if he wishes. I think it was a fair price for their condition and if he takes the time to get them back to 100% he'd certainly make his money back and then some.
I do hope he gets to enjoy them in all their bass-er-ific glory before passing them on though.

Ultimately I decided they were too damn big, even though their size is what makes them rock.

Ya' snooze ya' looze. Those are little ones, an aquaintance of mine in Portland has one Super Tower that is every bit of seven feet tall (I'm 5'7"and would have to hop to touch the top), very impressive looking speaker. Too bad he doesn't have the other one...:tears:
Even the small Super Towers are pretty awsome.

Nice 7-element with a JVC planar supertweeter there!?

Can't decide if they are true ribbons or little quasi's. Don't have the steel knife edge or output of an EMIT. I've got those JVC's trying to make my tweeterless NS-1000M's sound untweeterless...sure the dispersion pattern's no match but nearfield it's not bad. Could retool my DQ-10's and replace its Piezos with 'em (that's the DQ-10's weakest link).

a couple years ago I'd contacted someone who bought a pair of these on ebay that came with documentation of some kind. He said he'd scan what he got and send them to me, but of course he never did. And of course I don't think I still have his email address...I will look through my archives and see if maybe by some chance I still have him.
