Voice of Music reel to reel patch cord hookup

Recently acquired a VM 711 reel to reel and tape, after cleaning and lube job it plays old jazz tapes quite well. The instructions explain how to record but I'm not having much luck getting a good recording, how would I hook up patch cord to record from CD's or an LP?

My 1963 VoM Model 740 stereo tube reel-to-reel tape deck has 1/4 line input jacks. That is what I use with 1/4 to RCA adapters.

Your CD or LP would go to an amp and the amp should have monitor output RCAs.

output from the amp to input on the tape deck

I checked out a picture of the 711a on the VoM web site but it did not reveal much.

How about demagnetize the record head?
