Volume Pot Trouble

Hi all,
I have an Alesis R100 studio Reference amp. Bought used. Both volume pots are very scratchy and the danger is that from zero, even if you turn the volume a fraction it goes to high volume and could bust my speakers. I heard that cleaning it with "Deoxit" could bring the pot to the normal state. I would appreciate your counsel on this. Also how I would go about getting ths product. Thanks

Hi RJ,

You can buy the stuff at Radio Shack, but it aint cheap. It is easy enough to use, though. Just spray a bit down into the pots as best you can and work the knobs back and forth for a while. SOmetimes it does wonders.

I just did the controls on my Pre-Amp; a 1977 (or there abouts) Dayton-Wright SPS Mk III that I bought new many many years ago. It has good quality Allen-Bradley controls but I guess they all eventually dry up and get dirty. I used the Radio Shack type contact cleaner/lubricant. Just check to make sure that it is safe for plastic parts. It's usually indicated on the can. You want to avoid anything caustic or petroleum based (no WD40). You may also have a hard time getting it into the control. Some like the Allen-Bradley are very well sealed to avoid dust contamination.

Deoxit is also available at Guitar Center. Run a search on "dexoit" on AK and there will be a number of tutorials on how to use it properly and where to get it. My main piece of advice - UNPLUG your unit.
