Volume problem with Marantz M-CR612

Hello All,

Since 2,5 year I have a Marantz M-CR612 networkplayer connected to a set of B&W speakers. Since one week the volume control does not work anymore. The hardware volume buttons don't work at all, but strange enough the volume can be changed in the first few seconds after turning the equipment on:

- using the HEOS app
- using bluetooth (playing youtube music)
- using Spotify

It is only the few first seconds, after this the volume is 'stuck' again and can not be changed. When using the button or app, the display shows the volume goes up or down, but the actual volume doesn't change. If I want to change the volume now, I first have to set it to a certain volume in the display with the buttons or app, turn the equipment off and turn it on again. After putting it on again the volume has changed to the chosen volume. I have already put the equipment back to factory settings and updated the software, but unfortunately without result.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Did you find a solution to this problem? My marantz has the same problem.

Hi All
I have also started getting the same problem. I've reset to factory settings numerous time but still the same problem. Has anyone solved this issue

Hi, an update on this problem. Phoned number as per response from Zuki2023. Got through to Dan, who was very helpful. Evidently a known problem with the power supply. Referred me to Sontec for repair. Currently progressing.

Hello, In addition to this problem, I found another problem, when I use my mobile phone to play music by Bluetooth, after 1~2 minutes, the sound will start to break or skipping. >_<!!!

Hi, I have the same problem. I've just came from vacations and things didn't start good;)) Apart from volume problem, the subwoofer doesn't work, or I can say, it's making some strange noises.
All this problems are popping up at a similar time for all of us.. Software problem?

Answer from official service in England:
The fault is usually in the internal power supply but it is not always the case, if the internal power supply is the issue we would not be able to offer a repair as the part needed is no longer available, and the manufacturer has not provided any substitute parts.

My local serviceman fixed it and it was a power supply.

Anyone found the root cause of this problem? I'm having the same volume issue together with the LED's left and/or right sometimes turning off or blinking for no reason.
I already figured out that the issue should be related to the power PCB and 4 components should be replaced. An IC, Transistor, Resistor and Capacitor should be replaced, but don't know which one's yet. I got this info from a Marantz service organization but that was as far as the Person would go in providing information :(
If someone here could provide me with the service manual link I could start figure it our myself

@Mar_ng, would is be possible for you to check with your local serviceman what modifications he did?
Thanks already for the help. I miss pumping up the volume once is a while :)

I have the same problem on my MCR-612, also ~2.5 years old (just out of warranty) and distorted sound from the subwoofer and difficulties in changing volume and blinking led.
I got the service manual too, it's very detailed but I am not really an expert in electronics. Did some basic capacitor replacement and soldering in the past on other devices where it was clear on what had to be replaced, but here I have no clue.
I saw there is a complete replacement power supply board for sale here: Sound United power supply board MCR612, but it is quite expensive and it may not solve the issue. Definitely too expensive for me to just try it (shipping and VAT will be on top of the price).

Will bring it to a local serviceman tomorrow and see whether he can fix it.

My M-CR612 has been fixed, it was as expected a failure in one of the capacitors in the power supply. It was obviously visible as the capacitor was bulging my local serviceman mentioned. He replaced 2 of them. Second one wasn't broken, but better to do it at same time since everything was dismantled anyway and to reach the power supply board quite a lot needs to be dismantled. Looking at the scheme in the service manual I would expect these were C805 and C806 then?
Repair cost were low (€45) compared to a complete replacement of the power supply board.

Hi, I had exactly the same problem. Symptoms: When using the button or app, the display shows the volume goes up or down, but the actual volume doesn't change.
Thanks to the information I got from this forum, I was able to direct the skilled local serviceman to the problem with power supply. And yes, that was it! And now I got My M-CR612 back and fixed. The repair cost was €60 and most of that for labor.

Here are some technical details: Problem was in the power supply branch providing the -12V. (the only branch providing negative voltage he said). Capacitors were visually ok, but their capacity was considerably lower than it should have been. When he measured the output of the power branch, it had voltage fluctuations and was not able to deliver the desired output. So he replaced the capacitors + one more component which I didn't catch and M-CR612 is as good as new.

Looking again C805 and C806 are indeed less likely as these are high voltage capacitors and seem more on the input voltage side. But again, I am not an expert in electronics :-)
Any local serviceman with the right expertise and tools should be able to find the cause and repair it I guess. Hopefully it will be a durable repair and not a returning issue.

I fixed my set by replacing below component on the main power PCB for new value according a so called service revision update. The capacitor C222 had value 0 uF and thus defect.
Old value: C222 220uF 35V
New value: C222 220uF 50V and parallel to this capacitor an additional resistor R233 of 470K needs to be placed.
I also replaced precaution wise C221 as this was out of range.
See attached part of the electrical diagram concerned.

Thanks for the information, very precise and just what I needed,
I've just disassembled my unit and C222 definitely looks damaged. I'll replace it and add the extra R233 resistor as you mention.
I'll come back with results.

Looks like the problem was solved, volume control is working again.
