VPI 16.5 Record Cleaner

I am playing "catch up" on this thread....

The one thing that would answer the FINAL question would be to have the CSN&Y cleaned on a VPI. It appears that the SC did just as good a job as the VPI on one LP. Right? The big difference was the CSN&Y. Right.... Well maybe a final chapter, end, to this "shoot out" would be to listen to the CSN&Y and then run it through a VPI to see if there is a final difference. It may be that the vinyl has crud imbedded into it and NOTHING will get it out... I say one time through the VPI and one last evaluation...

If we can get John or Grumpy to agree, that's fine with me. They may need to run through three or four times to see if continued cleaning would do anything. I can imagine it being dirty enough to need quite a bit of scrubbing. Its beyond help, otherwise.

As I read the “shoot out” the VPI and SC are equal when it comes to an LP in good condition. The biggest difference here is that the VPI will vac the LP dry, and you have to manually dry the SC. The REAL question is with dirty, grungy records… Does the VIP do a “KILLER” job first time out, or is it like the SC where you MAY have to run it through a few times. If both are equal in cleaning ability , then is the extra cost for vac drying worth it ? CSN&Y may answer that question... Just IMHO

Given the option I would choose the VPI over the Spin Clean even if in the final analysis the Spin Clean does as good a job as the VPI is capable of doing. The fact is however that I cannot afford a VPI notwithstanding that the VPI is more convenient and less labour intensive than the Spin Clean.

Nonetheless it is gratifying to learn that the Spin Clean does a credible job when compared to the VPI. If the final test could be arranged it would be an interesting final comparison.
