Agree totally on the weight, and there is another issue, as well. Power. Consumers have developed an appetite for more and more power. Back "in the day" zero to sixty in 10 seconds was respectable for a sporty car. Now people expect more performance than that even in stodgy sedans and low-end economy cars. With modern engine technology, I'm sure a small car could easily get 35-40 MPG with smaller, less powerful engines.
