Sounds Good
So I scored a free A/K 430 the other day. Spend some time on it and then put it in my office and didn't like it much at all.
Empty, I thought. Almost vacuous. But I gave it a chance and I moved my speakers around. And ran sources, an EQ, this speaker, and that one.
It was real sweet through but the sound felt reaching and strained. Thin and promising. Screw that, I won't be teased.
After some time I put a Yamaha back into the spot and hated it worse. WTF?! I'm a big fan of Yamaha and have used it daily for ever. Sounded shrill. (I just cleaned all the receivers I have) Hurt me throughout. I swapped out 2 Yamahas and about cried when the one I was using all this time sounded like I didn't want to listen to it.
Called wife in. WOAH, wait a minute. She happily came in and occupied the chair. She moved into position and found her center. I was at the controls wondering what was going on, but it seemed safe, so... We talked about listening, how to do it, what to expect, using senses...it still seemed safe although she giggled at some of my descriptions.
I asked her to shout out when she loved the sound. So, we played for a while and she was really into it. !!!
We took some time with Yamahas but we both agreed we were being punched in the face by the sound and that was too much work. I was using vinyl and FM as sources as that's what's typically playing.
I put the Lafayette into the spot and while I loved it there was some crazy static periodically punctuating the sound. It died down after about 10 minutes but - WTF?!
I put my favorite Yamaha back into the spot and told myself I would get used to it. THat lasted 3 hours....I put the H/K back.
Wife went about her business and over the next 2 days in and around living I kept playing...but I was liking the sound, mostly.
On Sunday I swapped-out the nova 8b's for the model 6's. I ask wife to join me again in my office. Again, she happily came in. I know, spooky. She resumed the chair and I spun-up Milt Jackson with Ray Brown, "Listen Here".
Wife shouted out - "YEAH, I like this. OMG this sounds terrific!" She was giddy and then shouted, "Put the CLASH ON! DO IT NOW!"
Heh.
I put The Clash on.
I wondered if I might have to regoop the surrounds on the model 6s but that thought didn't last long.
No EQ, treble and bass both at 13:00 hrs, contour and hi/lo-cut off. Speakers right where they need to be for this room.
We put some Commodores on - and got the funk out. WAF was stratospheric.
She even agreed to stereo in the living room IN ADDITION to the already omnipresent home theater set up. It wasn't even my birthday.
