Wanna Cry ?? (Windows Vulnerabilty Patch Now!!!)

https://www.wired.com/2017/05/still-use-windows-xp-prepare-worst/

Use out of date OS software at your own peril.........
I was just going to say that. But, not as politely. ;)

Anyone who uses a non-current OS and non-updated software, any platform, is at risk. (Yes, I'm looking at everyone who owns computers they think can never get infected...they can be, and they do. Any I.T. person who advises otherwise is foolish.) I don't run my Linux- or BSD-based web servers on outdated OS or software; I don't run my devices at home with outdated OS or software. Ever. There is no excuse not to. Hardware too old? Go buy new hardware. Computers are dirt cheap commodity items now, and they are more powerful, much smaller and way more efficient. New OS different? Get used to it. Adapt.

I don't want to go so far as to say that those who don't run the most recent versions deserve what they get, but...let's just leave it at, "you've been warned, multiple times."

Then again, I can always charge extra to repair anyone's computer if it's hacked. More money in my pocket that way. ;)

XP just needs to be buried. It died over a decade ago. Not that it was bad back then, but it's sorely outdated and very, very insecure. It belongs with IE6 in the landfill of history.

Hello,

And yet people don't update and they are not necessarily idiots for not wanting to.

Nor do they need IT professionals lecturing them about it in a snarky fashion.

I am all for latest greatest to a degree. But not to buy Bill Gates another billion dollar home degree.

See the big picture and quit supporting what is happening in the computer industry.

Frannie

Bill Gates is no longer is involved with MS - he sold off everything (all or most of his stock). He has so much money, he doesn't need anymore.

It is the WHOLE IT Area that is going to heck in an hand basket. Google putting out Android and then saying they are not responsible for what the phone/pad manufacturers update or not IS a crime.
Oh I was just making a example.

China , India and Russia all got hammered by this.

Now anyone want to tell me clearly why they would without using Google ??

And then see the big picture along with me ??

Frannie

Stupid question: why did some of the victims pay the ransom? And where did they transfer the money to?

Do these disgusting criminals have a Paypal account or something like that?

Bitcoins and as of a while ago no one has actually accessed the account.

You did read the Blurb about 5 or 6 posts up from the UK IT "Professional" about paying 80K pounds a year in ransom by his company ??

Frannie

Hiya,

People are paying even today.

A little before 9:30 a.m. on the East Coast, Monday became the most lucrative day in the four-day run of the Wanna Cry ransomware that has wreaked havoc across the world.

Not gonna link the site because its kinda political. But it jives with some other info I have gleaned today.

Frannie

Not to sidetrack the thread, but yall want to be careful with GOOGLE CHROME UPDATE popups as well. Those are making the rounds once again. Had one when I first hit one of the other audio forums the other day and if you check the UPDATE button, it usually goes to some strange off the wall site. Got out of there, ran Avast and MalWareBytes just to be on the safe side, and no hits here, so it must have been the site itself.

Let's be careful out there! ALWAYS check the link in the status bar on ANY site, no matter how "safe" ...

Yea, thanks Frannie for all the info & I heard the other day that anyone using Windows XP should junk their machines ASAP! :D
Well, I wish I could, but my piggy bank is still in rehab!

I know computers are cheap out there to be had, but some of us are still on a budget & can't upgrade at the slightest whim of terror out there. All I can do right now is keep saving towards one & pray nothing happens like this latest outbreak.

Just wish those who have the talent to do the evil kind of stuff like this outbreak would spread that talent around to help make this life an easier place to enjoy & live.

Hiya,

And it appears this predates WannaCry

WannaCry, the hacking attack that took thousands of computers' data for ransom over the last week, hasn't apparently been very lucrative for its makers so far. But another, apparently larger and smarter hacking attack that uses the same exploits, is silently using vulnerable machines across the globe for profit.

This is according to a report by security company Proofpoint, which has discovered the "very large-scale" attack that, instead of encrypting user data and asking for ransom, silently installs a cryptocurrency miner on the victims' computers.

Sigh,

You can also use the following code block on any windows machine (save as a .bat and run across a network) to quickly disable fundamental points of access from a protocol and port level if for some reason you can't deploy the patch or run Windows Update quickly enough.

Code:
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule dir=in action=block protocol=TCP localport=139 name="Block_TCP-139"
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule dir=in action=block protocol=TCP localport=445 name="Block_TCP-445"

sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb20/nsi
sc.exe config mrxsmb10 start= disabled

dism /online /norestart /disable-feature /featurename:SMB1Protocol

Creates firewall rules for blocking ports 139 and 445 and disables SMBv1 on Win7 (last line also disables on Win8/10).
