wanting to get in shape/loose weight

aidynphoenix

Super Member
im only 21yrs old and weigh 223lbs at 5'8" im strong and stocky but im getting a belly and want to turn this around.

im willing to start doing alot of exersize and eating differently..

but im hoping to hear other peoples stories and find support.

i found this calories calculator.. http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc

i want to loose enough weight to see my chest muscles again.
and i have read that while dieting you can loose alot of muscle with the fat.
what kinds of foods should i eat to get everything i need..
i have been taking vitamins (golden leaf) complete multi vitamin/mineral supplement.

and i think my most important question..
is there a safe ammount of calories i can burn each day more than i am consuming??
i mean it would be bad if i was consuming 1000calories and exersizing enough to be burning 2000 daily right?

I'm 18, 6', and weigh 350.

well you dont need to loose weight if it doesent bother you..
but i must admit. it does bother me when i see ugly or stupid guys who have hot chicks because they are ripped.
im not bad looking imo. but i want to have hot chicks too. lol

BTW: i realise that you dont need to any of those things to have hot chicks.. but im not looking for a huge/longtime relationship.
at 21yrs old and as quick as i feel like i am ageing.. its about time i start having more fun.

Well, I can chime in here because I am in the same position as you phoenix. I'm 20, 6'4" and weigh about 350 or so. I hate having a belly. I wouldn't say I am obese because I can easily climb ladders and work outside until the cows come home, I just need to drop a few pounds. I am sure it would my days a lot easier if I wasn't carrying around so much dead weight on top of the tools I need for my trade.

I'll be interested to see the information that gets posted in here, because I am sure I could use some of it.

well lets do something about it!!

according to that calculator i linked to at 350lbs you would burn more than 1100 calories of light jogging per hour.
i know jogging hurts and its getting to be winter.. but we can do it!
hell you can burn 480 calories per hour from playing bowling :)

i think the hardest part will be the watching howmanny calories we are consuming..
a single taco from tacobell is more than 200 calories!! yikes!

i just dont want to overdue it and hurt myself..
i have heard that once you start exersizing it can become a habbit

i have also read that starting with a diet is usually a good way to prepare for exersizing on a regular basis.. it makes you feel lighter and more energetic.
and imo i feel pretty damn heavy.. i usually grunt when getting out of a car..

i just dont know what foods to avoid and howmuch of which ones i should be eating..

oh and btw..i have a garage full of canned goods my mom goes to the food pantry each month.. we have tons and tons of canned fruits and vegetables..
if you want any.. they are yours..

ok i am motivated. and am going for a jog.. i got my stopwatch.. going to see howmanny minutes or seconds i can jog for...

get help......there are plenty of people in your situation that walk/jog/skate/workout/exercise together....search up and find a local group you can hang with. They'll help motivate and keep you honest.
and while you're sitting at a computer....I would suggest finding a forum that specifically deals with "these" issues...not an audio forum. Just saying!
find a Nutrition forum, and an exercise forum....
Go for walks more....take the dog, Park further away, shop the perimeter of the grocery store, drink lots of water and eat a good breakfast.

i made it 2:45 before i had to start walking.. my throat feels a bit sore and i had a cramp before i started walking.. i walked alittle bit and jogged some more.. for a total time of 4:03 of jogging.. yes i did stop the watch when i started walking..
according to that guide i burned about 46 calories there (yikes)
that was halfway around the block.. this is going to be a difficult.

question though..
if i find running very difficult, and bikeriding easy..
i can bikeride for hours and not be tired, yet running for minutes can take waay more out of me.. does that mean bikeriding will be less effective for me than running is, as far as calories i am burning according to the guide?

As a bit of advice, if you're not used to jogging -- start walking. Walking for two hours at a stretch will help a lot to begin with. It will get your body used to exercise without damaging your knees or feet. The thing is to start slowly and work yourself up to be able to handle more strenuous exercise.

thanks hbrocks.. i think i will find a forum for this..
but i would like to keep my progress here also..
i really love AK. and i feel at home here.. i will look into it.

sometimes when watching movies like rocky for example. i get motivated.. in the parts of the movies where he is training and working hard it really motivates me..
anybody have any good movie scenes or music thats really motivating?

well maybe i should start bikeriding instead..
according to the calculator jump-rope is really effective.
maybe i should give that a try.
maybe i have found a use for my extra speaker wire haha

I am 21, and have been overweight for the past 10 years of my life.

I can tell you guys its really just a matter of figuring out in your mind what you need to change and do it.

Number ONE on the list is cutting your calories. Most importantly, just eat less. It sucks, trust me, I found anytime I was angry, tired, bored, or sad I wanted to eat. I also was addicted to sugar and milk, which caused me to crave it every day. Try to turn this around in your head, diagnose yourself from a perspective of every time you eat there is a reason or motive behind it, and you will have to work on that!

I started cutting to 2000 calories a day, and that was barely enough to loose weight. Cutting is important, what you eat is really important, but its not realistic to just completely change what you eat overnight, few have the mental drive to do that. Work on not eating large meals, not finishing your meals, not making so much...etc. Remember, drinks are loaded with calories.

I also started running every other day. Once you can run for more then 5 minutes it's absolutely a good time. If anyone says it isn't they probably have never been in shape.

Lifting weights is where I first started when I wanted to loose weight. It is a little scary at first because you have no idea what to do at the gym. It is all experience, you cannot just go in there and start lifting as much as you can etc..if you have a friend who goes or wants to, get him/her involved and go figure it out, don't care about looking stupid. Go back a few times a week, get a routine and you will feel like you fit in in no time.

There is TONS of info online. Remember. Never believe %100 what you read. I know many people personally who read on bodybuilding.com for a few days and think they know how everyone needs to work out and the correct technique and such. That is NOT possible. Everyone has their own methods and what feels right/good to them. Get multiple opinions, and try them out to find what works.

But as I said, first and foremost, get your eating habits in line. That is the hardest thing in the world for most. I worked out for 2 years 4days a week and grew a ton in muscle, but didn't start to loose fat until last year when I finally decided to turn to my diet and cardio more intensely.

Regardless I have felt %150 better since starting lifting and running just made everything even better. You have more energy, sleep better, get sick less.

If you have any questions you think I might be able to help with let me know. Post up what your first impressions are of working out etc...

I am by no means experienced, but I am struggling just like you guys to become more healthy.

Something I would HIGHLY recommend is to see a doctor first. Other problems can develop while being overweight, and you want to build your health, not damage it any more than it might be. A personal trainer can help you exercise properly too. I don't know how affordable these might be, but it's an investment as much as anything else; an investment in living healthier and longer.
Best wishes on your journey. Keep us posted.

There's also a method to jogging properly. You don't just tie on a pair of shoes and go. You have to warm up sufficiently and then warm down sufficiently. You need to learn the proper technique of jogging -- it's all about pacing yourself. I would strongly advise you to get a book or learn from somewhere the proper methods and techniques to use.

And be patient. If you rush things all you are doing is setting yourself up to be disappointed or frustrated. Slow and steady progress is the key.

I myself thought allot about how I wanted to do cardio. Honestly, I have biked my whole life, and I really just wanted what worked the fastest.

Running shouldn't be painful. But as mentioned you will have to work up to it. I found a secluded parking lot where I knew I wouldn't feel self conscious and started jogging SLOW for as far as I could (1-4min). I would get out of breath really fast, and just go back to walking. Within 2 weeks I could run 1.5 miles without stopping, it felt so good. No pain.

Once you build up the lung capacity, you will be able to jog for what feels like for ever, of course then your legs will have to catch up etc...its actually really fun.

And, you will notice the most improvements within the first month (give or take). So you will improve every time you go out. I would go every other day. Make sure you have good running shoes though, that is key. And if there is any pain stop. Pay attention to what your body tells you. If your right knee feels really hot or red after running take a day off and work on your form, consider other contributing factors like terrain, angle of surface etc..

But if you really detest it don't do it. It's not easy. But it is said to be the fastest way to burn calories.

I would think jump rope would be harder on your knees then running, but don't actually know.

Edit:

Rats, I completely forgot, STRETCH!! When I started I had pain in my legs. After stretching before each session I have had no pain what so ever.

awesome. this is just the kinda stuff i need to hear.
i am signing up for the ymca hopefully tomorrow.
whatever i do i will try and have fun..
i am hoping to just start eating healty foods.. which i have stockpiled because i never eat any of it..
