War....will it happen?

Kamakiri

The New Dynamic
In light of the latest statements from the US government and the Office of Homeland security, will the US be fighting a war on home soil? Are you planning on doing anything to prepare for this contingency? Should we?

Please keep your posts to the likelihood of it happening, and not the right or wrongs of the event. After hearing today's news, I myself am a little concerned.

I only have a few minutes so right off the top of my head...

I have to think like a terrorist in terms of when, where, how.
I'm also ging to very conscience(sp) of where I go, when I go in terms of crowds etc.

Funny, just today I woke up to the radio saying " this is the news for Feb. 11, 2003. The '11' stuck out to me and I thought why wouldn't they, the terrorists, try something on the 11th. of some month, any month, again? ... so why not today?

Sad but true, it's going to be a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time... bastards!

It makes me think about packing up and moving to the remote areas of the mid-west somewhere, away from the big cities to decrease the chances of anything bad happening.

Bastards!!!!

God Bless America

You should have a small back up power generator, preferably diesel with a few hundred gallons of fuel, a woodstove with a large pile of firewood, 6 months+ of canned and dry food (no refrigeration required) and any medications, and a location on an acerage with a water well out of the city. Kerosene lamps and a supply of kerosene are also essential. Candles, flashlights, fresh batteries and a portable all-band radio also a good idea.

If you live in the city in an apartment in a tower....move now. You are most vulnerable in such a setting to even simple loss of utilities like water and electricity.

This is not meant to scare anyone...IMO one needs to be prepared like this even in peacetime. Remember the Boyscout's motto. Be Prepared!

Almost forgot....toilet paper! You can even use this as currency if things get really bad. Here in Canada our paper money will make good toilet paper, and the government has thoughtfully printed so much of it that there shouldn't be a shortage.

I deleted some of the posts in this thread, only because I wanted to keep this particular thread on topic, because it's important to me. POLITICAL VIEWS ASIDE, please, in light of the latest statements from the US government and the Office of Homeland security, will the US be fighting a war on home soil? Are you planning on doing anything to prepare for this contingency? Should we?

Kam, in all seriousness, preparedness is never a bad idea.

I don't often bring this up, but I was one of the dorks who spent big bucks preparing for Y2K, and in the immediate aftermath of that, I felt pretty stupid.

Right now though, I'm pretty satisfied to have all of the supplies and the specialized knowledge that came from those Y2K preps, and have adapted a longer-term view of preparation, irrespective of what some gov't bureaucrat says.....

I'd recommend the same for everyone, as finances permit.

Honestly, I know there will be war, but haven't done a thing differently. I suppose that is the niavete (sp) of living on the West coast. Nothing happens here..well, so far anyway. I was in D.C. on the Sept. 11th, so I am not in denial. I just figure if something happens here we will just have to deal with it. Though a goosegun in the mouth will keep my audiogear safe, other than that, I can just eat grass.
However, I do think Bush is actually trying to avert war, he is building up so many forces, active, reserve and National Guard plus I believe 40 or more nations, that only a fool would stand and fight the rest of the world alone. Alas, since Saddam is such a fool, there will not be much chance of getting out of this one without a fight..and once we win, I am sure we will be paying to rebuild Iraq.....that's just the American way.....and I dig it that way:cool:

War on our soil? Sucide attacks on us basically right? Sure, I don't doubt it. Various groups have used such methods in the past. Will innocents die? Yup, sadly that's what war does.

Hmmm what can I do to prepare for a possible biological/chemical attack spewing from an inconspicuous place near me? Not a damn thing to be honest. I suppose it has a lot to do with proximity too but...

It's soooooooo easy to slip such things through the thousands and thousands of frieght car boxes that come into this country anually. Uhhh folks, they don't search every box and the amounts of these dangerous chemicals do not need to be real large in comparison to the damage they can do. We are dealing with people that have money to make things happen and a belief in their points of view like our goverment believes in thier own.

Will I be in an area that might be targeted? Hmmmmm I want to say I doubt it. Rural area and all here. But I do travel all over the main city at times. Really all I can do is pray to our God in heaven that no one, middle east or USA has to die for any reason. Am I living a life with blinders on? What else can I do? My goverment is entrenched, I must follow its lead. Lord in heaven, have mercy on us all...

Geeee why didn't I invest in duct tape and plastic drop cloths sigh... :dunno:

I am a member of the ground zero club as my life depends on my access to medications and doctors. If there is a chemical or biological event close to me I do not expect to survive it. I do own land way the hell out in the sticks but I can not allow a threat to cause me to live in any other way or in any other place than what I have chosen.

Well as a life long left coaster, I'm a pretty fatelistic guy. When your numbers called your numbers is called. I do have a pretty well stocked garage full of drinks and for so most likely we could ride out most emergency situations for some time I think.

On the world terrorist situation I can only feel that while our goverment has a fundemental responsiblity to try their best to protect the public ,in all reality it is pretty much an impossible task. Therefore going on the offence and bringing the war to them makes a lot of sense to me. Others are welcome to disagree and may even be wiser and smarter then me on these matters.

If you alter your lifestyle to attempt to thwart terrorists then haven't they accomplished their goal? Living ones life based on a threat perceived is sort of crazy. We take risks everyday just driving to work or walking to the mailbox, and I'd bet the odds of dying in a car crash far outweigh the odds of getting killed by a biological weapon or a suicide bomber. Last year in the U.S. over 1,000,000 people died of medical malpractice and over 150,000 died of gun shot wounds, so statistically the 3,000 who perished on 9/11 are a tiny drop in a very large bucket. I don't point this out to be callous just to illustrate a point. Everybody has their time to go, so live life like it may be your last day. Or like my pastor says " Live life like Jesus is watching you"

Mike

I aint changing a thing for No damn terrorists !

Living in an area that is often threatened by weather emergencies, although the threats rarely materialize, I have developed a lifestyle of being prepared. I have not altered my way of life at all, because of the terrorism threat, other than to be more aware of my surroundings.

Not worried I think Maine is at the bottom of the terrorist hit list, plus like Texas and others we got more guns per capita so they would be out gunned here.

P.S. Jay you Y2K dork!!!! LOL! How could people believe that stuff!!!:p:

well, it's about time already

Major airports and cities are going to be the targets because the terrorists want to hit where it hurt us the most. There will be some killings in the US for sure but that should be the least to worry about.
I do believe Bush is making a big mistake when he wants to get rid of Saddam by force. There is no way the US troops can handle a guerilla warfare if Saddam knows how to unite his people and gets the suport from the Arab world. This is easy for him as "his" nation is under attack or invasion. And all Saddam needs to do is to wear down uncle Sam like the North Vietnamese did previously in the Vietnam war at the cost of hundred thousand Iraquis people and thousands GI's body bags. Then antiwar movement 'd gain strength and ... you know .. history repeats itself.
