The Wharfdale W-25 is very much like the AR-7. I have owned both. The W-25 totally outclassed the AR-7’s. I gave the pair I had to my brother, and he still has them. Sadly my W-25’s were stolen many years ago. Take a look at the 2 speakers and their crossovers. Both have 8” woofers

AR-7 crossover. It has a SPST toggle for a “flat”, or Normal settings of the tweeter. .

I'm surprised to hear that. The AR7 was the predecessor to the AR18, which was a good entry-level speaker for its time. The Wharfedale tweeters in particular don't look like anything special.

Don’t think I wasn’t surprised at the time. In those days in my world AR ruled. The tweeter is a conventional closed back BIC driver. The AR-18 came along after I had moved on from the marque.

I learned in later years these Wharfedale’s had the “English” sound which was derived from a BBC specifications for a speaker for BBC studios.

Thanks for supplying the very good comparative pics. I'm interested in both of these speaker models, but this subjective comment doesn't mean anything to me. Could you expand on this a little bit to better describe your evaluation?

(BTW, Wharfedale has an "h" in the company name.)

It has been a lot of years since I had both of these speakers togather. My brother still has the AR-7’s and I have been trying to get them back so I can restore them. As I remember the sound on the W25’s was far more transparent than the AR-7. Like the W35’s I just finished with they were marvelous with with Baroque, Rococo music, and really good with ancient music’s of Telemann, Percel, etc. I play this music myself. Recorders, Natural flutes, and especially the Sackbutt. I call this kind of music, “quiet music”. Meaning that is was played in quiet places. The first time played the music of Thomas Tellus in a place that had a long, in this case about a 4 second echo I was stunned. The long cords in this style of music struck a note in that space that lingered long enough that you played the harmony into that echo. This is the sort of music these late W series acoustic suspended Wharfdales do so well.

On the technical side the W25, and the W35 did much better on the lower powered amps I had at the Time. The level pot the W25 made a big difference you could set the tweeter just so, on the AR-7 you switched a fixed resistor to reduce it’s output. You can see the differences in the crossovers. The AR-18 mentioned above has a crossover that is almost a direct copy of thr W25’s Crossover.

I have got into a bad habit with the Wharfdale name. I am a 65+ WPM typist on the PC, and I don’t look at the keyboard. I watch the words appear on the screen. I catch spelling errors. On my iPhone I am a SPC typist, Find Peck and Cuss.

On eBay there is a pair of W45’s which is the largest of this series. They are pick-up
Only in Maryland. I would love to have them. The W45 has the BIC-413 midrange, and the BIC-8983 tweeter of the W35 with a 10” woofer. I would love to do a comparision between the W45, and the AR-2AX. My brother has a pair of AR-2AX’s and a Sansui amp I cannot talk him out of.

In anticipation of acquiring a pair of W-25 I just purchased a pair of W-25 crossovers. Now I am watching for a unmolested pair of W-25’s.
