Was offered a free Acoustic Research AR9...

I was dropping off some records at a fellow collector's house today, when he offered to give me an AR9 speaker. He picked it up in a deal a few years ago but has never used it. (Three drivers need a re-foam.)

I had never seen one in the flesh before, and the AR9 is one impressive speaker! It's about 4 1/2 feet tall, weighs130 pounds and has two 12" woofers. Overall, the condition on this one was excellent.

The catch, of course, is that there is only ONE of them, not a pair.

I think I'm going to pass. It's just so freaking big! I know I could always part it out, but that's not something I'm really inclined to do. On the other hand, he showed me the gear that he picked up along with the AR9--a Luxman preamp, Luxman tuner and a Hafler amplifier--and it too has been sitting unused, so maybe a deal could be struck for the whole lot.

What would you do?

find out the model numbers on the gear and the maybe grab the whole thing. part the ar9 to pay for most of it. Or pass on the opportunity if the Lux units or the Hafler are not gotta have units.

Its no good to anyone as a whole individual unit. You could probably help a few folks out on here by parting that one out, especially with the tweeter and upper mids. Needing new surrounds doesn't devalue the others by much as most would need it anyway if not done already.

An AR9 in excellent condition and the best advice is to part it out simply because it needs a refoam and it's a single?

How about grabbing it, putting it aside in a safe place until -sooner or later - another single AR9 comes up. And when it does, it is bound to sell for very little because it too, is also a single. Then refoam the pair as needed (not terribly expensive) and have a set of one of the finest vintage model speakers for relative chump change.

It's a perfect center channel for an AR based home theater! And if not a center, it would be an impressive sub, through it's biamp inputs. Regardless, they're awesome speakers. One or a pair, I'd take it. It's a perfect match for both my AR90's and AR58s speakers. I wish I had your luck.

And I just gott'a add; OMG, you turned down a free AR9...!!!!! :mad::rant::no::crazy: R U Crazy...??? :dunno:

Let us know what you decide to do? :thumbsup::thumbsdown:

I'd grab it, refoam the drivers, and use it as a subwoofer while I wait for another one to show up. Seriously, those are set up for biamping, right? Just run something powerful into the bottom end and you'll have one kick ass subwoofer.

Build a DIY project. You could style it after the AR98ls which uses one each of those woofers per cabinet. You could search eBay for another one of the eight inch woofers, or use a different mid-bass. I would forgo the fancy mid-dome and tweeter mounted on the single plate, as they are expensive. Maybe a couple of Dayton drivers? The main thing is you have two of those excellent 12 inch woofers already.
