Washing amplifiers

In related news I got some MG chemicals flux remover, and honestly it is not any better than IPA. Still need a ton to remove residual, and it will still leave white crusting everywhere if you don't also scrub with a toothbrush. So I consider it a waste of money.
 
Dry for 2hrs in direct Arizona sunlight making sure to check it every 30 minutes to make sure it's not melting, I'm not sure what the melting point of an aluminum alloy is but just in case, I would be cautious of anything left in Arizona direct sunlight, never try to pick it up if it's metal unless you're wearing gloves, you learn that right away if you're moving from anywhere but Texas or Nevada (or New Mexico but they're not moving to AZ)!

Drying quickly lessens the chances or corrosion, most times you won't see the long term affects water has on metal but after a year or so any residue that's acidic will start to react with humidity and eat right through the wires, transformers are a problem since the wrapping of the copper wires (copper is super reactive and corrosive) will trap water along with cleaning particles. Each time it warms up the water starts reacting by humidifying and being trapped it just stars eating off the lacquer coating on the wires and the copper instantly starts reacting and shorts or looses it connection where the wires are exposed.

Many old transformers stop working due to the points where they solder the transformers output leads onto the inner windings. The remaining flux is not washed off after the leads are soldered and this is exactly where you'll find the wires are no longer connected. The thin copper wires are scraped clean to make the solder joint and then they're wrapped up. Over the years humidity starts the reaction and that small area starts to corrode and turn into a green colored powder or paste causing weird start up and loss of sound while the wires go through stages of deterioration.

Most JansZen power supply transformers can be repaired by unwrapping the transformers to reveal the connection solder joint and cutting the wire back to get to 100% clean to make a new solder joint, the winding wires are so thin you need to use a magnifying lens to get it all ready to solder. I use new output leads and make sure they're long enough to wrap a few extra times to keep them from being pulled on. This will apply to most old transformers but there's many other things that can cause them to stop working, I repaired 8 power supplies and 4 had this problem along with replacing caps and a bunch of ceramic resistors.
 
I won't do it! If it's that bad I'll keep it as a parts unit. I feel your asking for trouble. It's also if the unit is considered valuable or special on treatment. Well only if you plan on rebuilding it.... Maybe I'm paranoid?
Pretty much every PCB assembly line I have seen has a water wash as the last stage. . . fwiw . . .

I pull the boards first, but have never caused an issue by cleaning a board (but am pretty certain that I have prevented manyn- bar funkmis *NASTY*)!
