so i have been adjusting to life as a Mac owner, today i noticed a smudge on the faceplace of my 2205.

I've been cleaning it with windex and paper towels, being careful to keep away from the cabinet....but it keeps streaking and smudging. i am sure the previous owner smoked, i think there's just some residure on the front.

any problem with using copious windex applications? i know to spray the towel and not the face of the unit with the bottle.

also, do the knobs pull straight off? i think it would be easier to clean if they got out of my way.

Knobs pull straight off.

The smearing is caused by the paper towels. I don't know why - they just do. Try using a very clean terry cloth.
 
Rub gently with lint free cloth after.

Don't use windex on any early preamps; it removes the lettering.

Yes, this is tedious and frustrating. Could be worse I guess. I typically yank all of the knobs off, spritz a microfiber cloth with some purple 409, and begin cleaning. Use the dry parts of your cloth to "buff" the haze off of the areas you've just cleaned as you go. The corners are the most difficult areas as it's easy just to kind of move stuff into them. I also use an absolutely brand new razor blade to glide over the glass in the corners and other stubborn areas to remove crud.

Then, follow the 11th commandment and all is good - Thou shalt not touch anything but the freakin' knob when messing with your glass faced components!
 
Glass Cook Top Cleaner should do it.
1. Use the painter tape seals all edges (remove all knobs)
2. Spread thin layer of the cleaner on the glass - just like you are waxing your car (of course from the outside of the face plate)
3. Bounty Paper tower, go over thoroughly then take another clean paper towel (without any chemical) go over once more.
 
Way back when before windex and more people smoked, people washed their windows with ammonia and water. You can't buy a better premixed window cleaner than this, and I think windex was better way back when.

When I was into classic cars and would get a new project their was no better way to start to clean the windows as windex would just smier the filth around.

thanks guys - i'm pretty sure the lettering is on the other side of the glass. part of the "MC 2205 Stereo Amplifier" under the meters is missing, it was like that when i got it, i think it was sun-faded. i will persist with some microfibre cloths later....today i got busy with my tape decks, measuring the frequency response with a soundcard-based oscilloscope....there's another thread for that. i'll see what kind of cleaners i can get ahold of...i have windex and simple green on hand.....isopropyl alcohol, roasted garlic hummus...

Don't forget that newspaper is also the best "rag" to use when cleaning those windshields with the ammonia/water solution! :)

very well, you were right about the cabinet....let's see if i can find some without alerting homeland security
 
I use either Eagle One 20/20 glass cleaner or Napa window cleaner with a Micro cloth. Never any streaking issues.

you guys sure this stuff is safe for the plastic bezel?

also the outermost knobs do not want to come off (left gain and power), i don't want to pull too hard and wreck something

While most mild cleaners will be fine on most plastics, the silver panted edge around the bezel is another thing. That paint can ware off with a dry dust rage as well as constant washing with anything. Ammonia and warm water will not hurt the glass or plastic and lightly over the silver paint. Just don't rub hard on the paint and don't be OCD feeling the need to wash it every other day. I seen a old MC275 that was devoid of any painted print because the first owner constantly washed it with windex.

just checking - seems like the plastic bezel might not be something that you might consider, as i don't think it's a common material for McIntosh....whats a good ratio for water to ammonia?

i don't plan on touching the glass for a very long time after this is done. i use a new paintbrush to dust my gear occasionally, it gets into all the little cracks around the knobs and switches very well.
