Watch out for this weed!!!

I just spent 3 hours yesterday bulldozing an acre of some new kind of vine-type weed here in SoCal. I've never seen it before, and it overran and killed a whole bunch of Nopal cactus, which is a native weed. I only discovered it because I was making a new firebreak between our place, and a neighbor who opted to leave a bunch of 15-foot-tall grass and chaparral (burns faster & hotter than gasoline). Now it's all pushed into a ravine, and buried under tons of dirt by a 53,000-lb Caterpillar ;) . If it comes up again, I'll attack with herbicides. (That same neighbor brought in a bunch of truckloads of topsoil, probably containing this new vine.... Argh!

It really makes me wonder who the jacktards are that introduce some of these species to the US. I'm thinking kudzu, for example...

Poke is also known (at least in MD, where I grew up) as inkberry. Absolutely irrelevant to this thread, but I wanted to mention it for completeness :-P

Genesis - The Return Of The Giant Hogweed

Turn and run!
Nothing can stop them,
Around every river and canal their power is growing.
Stamp them out!
We must destroy them,
They infiltrate each city with their thick dark warning odour.

They are invincible,
They seem immune to all our herbicidal battering.

Long ago in the Russian hills,
A Victorian explorer found the regal Hogweed by a marsh,
He captured it and brought it home.
Botanical creature stirs, seeking revenge.
Royal beast did not forget.
He came home to London,
And made a present of the Hogweed to the Royal Gardens at Kew.

Waste no time!
They are approaching.
Hurry now, we must protect ourselves and find some shelter
Strike by night!
They are defenceless.
They all need the sun to photosensitize their venom.

Still they're invincible,
Still they're immune to all our herbicidal battering.

Fashionable country gentlemen had some cultivated wild gardens,
In which they innocently planted the Giant Hogweed throughout the land.
Botanical creature stirs, seeking revenge.
Royal beast did not forget.
Soon they escaped, spreading their seed,
Preparing for an onslaught, threatening the human race.

The Dance Of The Giant Hogweed

Mighty Hogweed is avenged.
Human bodies soon will know our anger.
Kill them with your Hogweed hairs

It's easier to figure out how marine creatures and insects get here as opposed to weeds. Ballast water on ships is a menace, as well as critters sticking to the bottom of the hull (think zebra mussel). The Emerald Ash Borer and other notable bugs come in in wood that's part of shipping containers and pallets. Some plants are planted on purpose, like multiflora rose and Chinese honeysuckle. Hogweed, I have no idea - why would anyone plant such a thing on purpose? So if it was imported accidentally, how did that happen? Your guess is as good as mine.

Wiki concurs with the Genesis song (which I did not know was actually a song - thought you were kidding!) that it was brought to the UK as an ornamental from Eurasia. It does not actually say how it got to North America. I suppose some idiot botanist or gardener thought it was a good idea.
