Are the watkins woofers in the RS series the same as in the quantum series? Are their differences between the paper and poly woofers? I recently aquired quantum 2's one with the original paper woofer and one with a clear poly woofer replacement from infinity. I bid on a watkins woofer on ebay from the RS line and it looks to have a grey poly woofer I am wondering if it is the same as the Quantum line watkins.

As I understand it, they are interchangeable.
I am not sure how this can be though, they must sound different.
My Q5 watkins woofers have large magnets, but not as large as the pictures on Bill Watkins ebay auctions. I have seen pictures of the 12" DVC woofers with smaller magnets than mine - so I suspect there are more differences than just paper or poly. Mine are both paper.

they are all supposed to perform basically the same, the cone being the only difference. even the new ones are supposed to. they might sound a bit different due to cone coloration, though. best to stick with matching ones, but while you're waiting you can use the two polys.

Thats what I was thinking. However I have always been a fan of paper cones.

If you just have to have paper, there are a couple of Quantum 3 Watkins woofers, with which I have no affiliation, on "that" auction site right now that to all appearances have paper cones. No links allowed except in Dollars and Sense but look in Vintage/Speakers and search for Infinity.
I myself fancy the clear poly variety and have a pair in my RS 2.5's and a spare pair in storage.

Not to hijack this thread, but from the front, those polypropelene coned woofers look just like the ones in my Norman Model 10a's. I haven't pulled them yet to check the baskets. Any comments?

Watkins woofer's are Dual Voice Coil (DVC), one coil at 4 ohms and one at 2.5 ohms.
DVC (dual voice coil). Watkins woofers have 2 voice coils. At low frequencies the woofers cross over from the 4 ohm voice coil to the 2 ohm voice coil. This greatly increases and extends bass response.I don't quite follow

To take a slight left turn on the original topic - I recently acquired a pair of 5" Watkins woofers as spares for my Infinitesimal 0.2's and they have have black poly cones. The part number stamped on the magnet is 902-0470 which, according to the spec sheet on the Infinity Classics site, is the replacement driver for the NLA originals. I've never seen a representation of any Infinitesimal 0.1, 0.2, or 0.3 DVC woofer with other than either grey or clear poly cones and was wondering if anybody knew if Infinity used black poly on some of the later replacement drivers that they sold separately.
