Wattage & Speaker Sensitivity (Sansui 221 and Klipsch Quartets)

Two Steps

Hey all,

I have a pair of very clean Klipsch Quartets. Their sensitivity is 97.5 dB SPL @ 1 watt. I run this with a restored Marantz 2230. They sound very nice. I know people sometimes gripe about the Klipsch sound with harsher amps (some solid state models and can be best paired with low wattage tube amps), but I think this pairing works well.

I also have a 10 wpc Sansui 221 that I use in my office cubicle. Always looking to play around with stuff, would it be an ok idea to hook the Quartets up to the Sansui?

I know sound is subjective and synergy can always rear it's head, but would 10 watts paired with efficient speakers with a Maximum Continuous Wattage rating of 100 watts be a good idea; or would it sound gutless because the speakers aren't getting the power they crave?

I know one watt of power will get the Klipsch to that 97.5 dB level, but is the only downside to the 221 the headroom/clipping that could occur past lets say 11pm on the volume knob?

Thanks!
Craig

P.S. I also have access to a Concept 11.0 (110 wpc), how would 1 watt from this compare to 1 watt of the Sansui 221 (10 wpc)?

I use Quartets. If you aren't trying to organize a rave in a warehouse, 10wpc should be plenty.

Haha, no rave warehouse here. Thanks for the responses. Mostly just Jazz, R&B, Classical, Rockabilly/Honky Tonk and 'some' Hip-Hop. I essentially needed speakers to cover ALL genres well enough. I have not found the optimal placement in our new house; looking for a bit more air and openness.

I have yet to get my Marantz 2230 volume past 11 o'clock.

At these lower volumes, can one tell a difference in fullness between Large Iron Transformers (75+ wpc receivers) and Small as found in let's say the Sansui 221?
