WC for TA 230 - a question

harman/kardon

Hi Everybody!

I intend to instruct a woodcase Carpentry specialist to build a woodcase for my Harman Kardon TA 230.

It should look as original as possible. Now I saw pictures of wcs here in the forum, are they original? What about heat ventilation? (I got some calamities with a Marantz 1300DC, as I mentioned in another thread, it began to burn...)

I mean, 20 valves and no open section above? Please some information, thank you very much.

Another question:

If you had a TA 230, would you try to get a woodcase, or do you think it looks without WC as good as with WC or even better?

BTW, I got the original metal case but I do not like it very much.

Unfortunately I failed with my friendly requests. So I decided (listening to my intuition) to instruct my carpenter to build a grill.

:tresbon: Beautifully done!!! Unfortunately, I was not very active on the forum this past May, or I would have noticed your post and sent you some hi-rez pix of a near-mint TA-230 with the original wood case I sold on eBay recently. It didn't have a top grille - probably okay though, due to the completely open back. To be honest, I like the way your case looks better - it kind of "modernizes" the unit a bit, and the added ventilation is certainly a bonus! :thmbsp:

(P.S. > PM me if you'd like those pix anyway...)

Pix would be fine, of course, thank you, you got a PM.

It is really astonishing that the old cases had only one ventilation possibility - the open back.

After an hour of working the grill got a temperature of (estimated) some 50 degrees Celsius. You can hardly touch it. So the 20 valves really produce a lot of heat and the grill makes sense, as you say.

Regards,
Christoph

Looks like I previously missed this thread also. Your case looks to be very well made.

I have an H/K wood case on my FA-3000X. The case is similar looking to yours and also fits the TA-230. My TA-230 has a custom solid walnut wood case.

Here are pics of the FA-3000X case:

No accusation - I just was so extremely unsure concerning ventilation. Thanks for reply and links Tinkerbelle!

The case with the centered grill is very interesting!

geez, tube h-k stuff is hard to find here, where did you find something like that over there! nice receiver btw!!

Perhaps the former owner was a US soldier in one of those US bases in Germany. I got it from Ebay for 297 euros some years ago with original metal case which is repalced now by a birch case, 12 layers, and one layer walnut finish.

That case is a classy upgrade for your older H-K receiver. I think the grill is very attractive and certainly looks original to my untrained eye.

BTW the grill...

... I measured after an hour or so some 45° - 48° Celsius over the grill. Is that okay? Or means that there is not enough heat ventilation?
