[Well i found a 1001 model playstation 1 at a goodwill store, took it home
and cleaned it up then i left it on for a week or so......... hey i'm impressed
it plays really well. The kids got me a brand new dvd /cd player at xmas
and the ps1 is better-alot better. I'm not an expert but it just seems to play
cd's with clear ,cleaner high's and better over all sound. When i found the
ps1 at the store (big smile on my face) i knew we had a new toy !! I have about
$15.00 into it and thats a great bang for the buck. Put some padding underneath the ps1 so it won't skip. Here's some pics:banana:

I have 3 of those in storage. Still prefer my Denon CD players by a long shot. They were ok, I guess.

PS1 was a very good jump from basic CDP's. I had a black Sony CDP that was supposed to be a nice model - the PS1 blew it away. Nice catch :)

I'm not speaking from experience but from what I've read not all PS1's were created equally. It depends on when it was made as to how good they are.

The OP got the right one, the unit with separate R/L outputs instead of the proprietary A/V plug.

Yes, the 1001 model has the seperate red and white audio on the back. Its the one that sounds the best, there are a ton of playstations out there but this one is a little harder to find these days but worth it if you get your hands on one of these little jems from sony.

I have one of those 1001 models too. They really do make a sweet CD player for next to nothing. I got mine on Ebay for 10 bucks. Add another 10 bucks for the wireless PS2 remote and it was good to go!

Sorry if it's bad form to bump an old thread. I figured that was better than starting another new one though.

Anyway... I just picked up one of these at Goodwill today for the princely sum of $7.99 (plus a $1.99 controller :) ). I haven't had much of a chance to listen yet, but from what I've heard so far I like it quite a bit. I'm especially impressed with the bass from this thing. It's very clean and extended.

The only drawback is it's butt ugly (particularly the controller), but I may have a solution for that. My work was throwing out an old tape deck chassis - basically a shallow wood box (mahogany I think). It'll hold both the PS1 and controller while allowing access and looking a little more presentable. I wonder if a t-amp will fit in there :scratch2:

Ok. I'm revising my initial listening impression a little. I think it's that the midbass is missing the hump I'm used to hearing.

Compared to my DAC the output is significantly lower, but that's not a problem.

I have to say it's very good fit with my downstairs setup. It's more laid back but that offsets the brightness of the speakers. All the important details are there though.

I should probably listen to some classical before I comment on the soundstage situation, but it seems a little less coherent than with my other setup.

Timely thread. I was mulling over how to make a CD player look like a strange ass piece of art, and I though that I could use the drive out of a PS. I don't know anything about CD players so here is my question.

I have a Maverick D1 tube DAC. Can I use that instead of the built in one on the PS??? If so, is there a site that might explain it? Cheers.

OMG! never looked before a ps1 with tubes! where did you get that pic? The ps1 is a great performer for my music cd's in general.
