Weak Output CJ PV 1

Everything had been fine earlier today. Just turned system back on after a few hours away and I was not getting any music, I thought due to issue with TT. I checked it all, swapped carts and double checked. Still no music. Went to CDP. Nothing, but I thought I maybe heard something very faint so I very carefully increased volume the volume until I could hear faint music. Volume was cranked well past 12 O'clock. Sounded like when you hook stuff up to wrong input and can't hear it. Or hook iPod up to vehicle system but forget to turn iPod volume up.

Is it possible this is a tube issue in the CJ? Tomorrow I will remove from cabinet and open. Thought I should ask first so maybe I have some idea what to look for. Not sure if TT had same issue as I did not swap back after CDP. I assume it does. Again, all was fine just hours ago.

One thing I will add, I thought I heard a bit of distortion earlier today, like a dust bunny on stylus, but it was clean and it was very brief, did not happen on several subsequent LPs. Maybe connected to this issue?

There was no warning, no pops or anything suspicious other than perhaps that moment of distortion on an LP today.

First validate that the issue isn't your interconnect cables.
Next try plugging in your CD player into each line level input to see if it's isolated to one of the input jacks.
Next pop the chassis off and have a look inside and wiggle each tube in its socket slightly and look for anything burned or fried.
Next try new line level tubes.

If none of the above obvious tests lend any clues, then you've got to roll up your sleeves and do the hard work of finding out what is wrong. And at that point it may be easier to send it to CJ for repair.
 
Swapped the CJ for another Pre and all is well. Checked inside CJ and see no obvious trouble. No blown caps or other obvious area of destruction. Soldering all looks fine. re seated all tubes and hooked back up. No better. Switched to output 2 instead of 1 and same problem persists. This is on all inputs. TT, Aux and Tape.
 
The usual problem in the CJ "PV" series is the power supply. Check to see if you have any HV, as a failed pass transistor is pretty common.

Packed up and headed to CJ tomorrow. I have no tech skills or tools other than a soldering iron. Forty year old gear due for an overhaul and who better than CJ in this case. Can’t wait for its return.
