Weird Bass/Low end?

Hey all!

Ive been facing an issue with my audio system for the past while and I really can’t think of a solution/what exactly is causing my issue.

I’m running a pair of Yamaha HS8W speakers through a Focusrite 4i4

My problem is that the bass on some songs sound super muddy, and others not so much. I really don’t know whats going on and its a huge annoyance, could it be an issue with the acoustics?

My desk is located in the corner of my room with the speakers at the optimal listening triangle.

The effect of the bass sounding weird is much louder IRL then it is in video.

A lot of issues are caused by the room, the placement of the speakers and your choice of listening position. IF you expect concert hall realism from those speakers its never going to happen. Even speakers approaching 5 figures mostly don't satisfy either.

Another issue is what you are expecting from your sound system. Have you spent thousands of hours listening to live un amplified concerts or are you wanting to experience some pre-conceived idea that has no basis in fact. I t can take many hours of attending concerts to train your self as to what is real and what is not. Maybe what you like is an out door experience. maybe its an experience in a world famous concert hall like the one in Boston, Mass. or Vienna Austria. Maybe you want a sort of neutral experience where you get great enjoyment from studio designed recordings. It takes hours and hours to learn what your after and then using that information to choose the right equipment to give that result in your listening space. You don't learn how to do this over night. Musicians have a distinct advantage as they have been taught how and what to listen for. Most audio lovers have not.

Well. I'm not expecting any crazy realism as you said. It's just confusing, maybe its the mixing of certain albums?

I think it may just be super bass heavy songs? I have no idea. "Here Comes The Sun" also gives out the same muddy bass sound.. Its not a turn off to listening to the music, but I think its in the around 100-150hz range as when I EQ with PEACE the noise goes away/lowers.

The aforementioned songs (Get Back & Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles) sound perfectly fine on my IEM's and DT990's.

the dt990s are in the same location, powered the with the exact same amplifer/source?

try each speaker (yamahas) alone, with a mono signal, then both speakers with the same mono signal, then the same mono signal to both speakers, but invert phase (swap positive and negative) on one speaker and report back.

Same source and amplifier, my Scarlett 4i4.

I'm confused on swapping phase? They're powered speakers with XLR/TRS for inputs. I can try the mono signal thing though.

How does the playing with the “room control” switch effect the bass? Have you tried it?

They’re powered speakers. And there is no phase switch on the back

The room control mode affects the bass. Play with the settings and see what happens

by check your phase, I suspect that the suggestion is that the wires to the speakers might be out of phase. I see that your speaker uses XKRs or Canon or whatever fancy plugs, so are unlikely to be set up wrong. Still, it is worth checking.

Before I used REW to make some corrections for my room, there was a bass resonance that was very prominent with certain songs and almost nonexistent with others.
