Weird issue w Nakamishi 480z Playing B side

I am stumped on this one. On a cassettes' side A , play, rewind, and FF without any issues. Everything is very quiet and smooth. However on side B there is a gear grinding sound coming from within the deck during playback, but playback sounds fine. FF does not work at all and more grinding is heard. Rewind works fine and is smooth and quiet.

This with all cassettes not just one or two. Any ideas?

Thats weird. There are no gears that can make that noise on a 480z. I wonder if one reel hub is cracked or broken and its skipping inside the cassette reel. So it wont ff when you flip the tape over. Try ff the tape to the end on side A, and flip it to side B and see what happens.

I don’t understand. A tape deck has no idea if it is A or B side! IF however, you mean that you Play an entire A side, then B reacts this way, then there are a number of possibilities. If you FF all of A side, then it does the same thing on B side Play, then something is very twilight zone. Especially since you say it does it wuth all cassettes.

Do you, by any chance have all your tapes neatly wound up on the A side? Might be that the problem emerges by the time most of the tape is on the take-up reel. In that case.
