I got a nice Marantz 2285B and put it on the bench. It needed light bulbs, a stereo indicator lamp and a good cleaning. I was happy with the way the piece was playing and satisfied there was nothing much wrong with the unit and went ahead with putting the cover back on after replacing the lamps. Once I had the piece back together, I plugged in my phone to the aux jack (which had been tested thoroughly earlier) intending to relax with my new Marantz and some classic Pink Floyd.
What happened next leaves me confused and unhappy. First I only have music in the right channel, while I am fiddling around with the jacks I lose all sound, as if the amp just died. Further investigation reveals that the tuner section is not powering up. The tuner section, and the rest of the unit was working well only moments before I put the covers back on and connected the phone via Aux.
So here is what the unit is doing or not doing. The protection relay closes normally after powering up. However, in FM there is nothing, no signal, no sound, nothing. The stereo indicator lamp stays lit, it is supposed to light up in modes other than radio, but it is staying on even in FM, not on a station and AM. Tuning the receiver does nothing, no sound, no movement on the meters. It is almost as if the receiver thinks we are still in aux mode. When I plug aux back in and give it some signal, I can hear music, but very low and have to turn the volume up nearly all the way to hear anything. I suspect this is just spurious signal. The amps seem fine, I have proper voltages in the power supply. I am at a total loss.
The covers did not impinge or crush anything while putting them back on. I have since taken everything back off of the piece and am backtracking my work but all seems fine. All the lights come on etc.
Any help in where to look for a problem would be appreciated. I have the service manual, but find it isnt a very good one. I need to know voltages into the tuner board, I also do not know where to check for said voltages, and the service manual isnt helping.
