Welcome to the British Audio Forum!

What a great idea! Congratulations and a hearty thank you to all those behind this idea. I am looking forward to some interesting reading.

Aloha,

Rob

I got excited when a friend told me she had some B&W speakers to get rid of. I guess that makes me a good candidate for this club.
I already have a NAD pre-amp and amp, Mission 770S speakers.

I'm powering a pair of Klipsch Heresys with a Cyrus Two/PSX amp, which puts out 70 watts of high-current (very musical) power. The Klipsch purists seems to consider it heresy.

A British audio sub-forum is a smashing good idea!

I'm very glad you think so. I'm looking forward to your enthusiastic contributions to the forum. It's a new forum and a new direction for AK, so it will take some time to get rolling, but I think it will end up a huge success.

My system is quite humble compared to some...a basik Linn system comprising a Genki CD, Majik IL amp and a Pekin tuner. And a Tascam DAT and various Denon cassette decks. The amp has been transformed after a repair effected by a friend. Out went the suspect 1996 era dubilier capacitors and in came a 10 Elna ones. Night and day difference. Speakers: running Mission 734i biwired. Always had a soft spot for missions but I know I'll get a better sound with something more modern. Blimey. They're in the same room as my PC. I hope they can't see the screen.

Nice stuff! Mission speakers always intrigued me....

I guess I can be in here. I have a Cambridge Audio Azur 851C running into powered speakers (Dynaudio Focus110A), mostly acting as a digital preamp playing MOG or local radio through a good old American Squeezebox Touch, but the CD player is very, very good too.

And I've got a Rotel MM/MC phono preamp out in the garage feeding a Bottlehead Quickie preamp signals from a pioneer turntable into whatever amp I am using - right now a Magnavox 8802 - into JBL S7 load speakers.

Ex pat here From Ashton, but now in Vancouver BC. I have a pair of Whafedale Mach 5 (actually labelled as CD-2.) A pair of w50 towers (similar to the E70's) a pair of E70 towers and a pair of W70 oldies. Can you tell I like Wharfedale? I run them today (the e70's and the CD-2 pairs) as a front left right and the CD-2's as a rear surround with an Altec centre. My amp used to be a 1120 Luxman, but I needed to replace the old stereo with a 5.1 amp, and found a cheap Yamaha 420. Although the Yamaha is great for movies at 5.1 it does not perform nearly as well as the old Luxman for stereo. Nowadays no one visits me to hear music (mp3 or albums,) but rather they want to watch movies.... hence the switch from stereo to 5.1 I have found the two pairs of Wharfedale have enough bass that I have not bothered with a bass speaker.

And I am now so old and tired I am no longer chasing to buy more audiophile stuff. I am complacent with what I have...

I might ask if anyone can recommend a xover for the old 1963 W70's I have. They are now taken apart for refinishing as end tables. Anyone willing to sell me a custom set for the old Wharfs? :D

Thanks for the Brit forum. I feel among people who can spell Wharfedale....

Mike,
The cover for the W70 is very basic. Just a 4mfd cap, a choke and lpad. You could exchange the choke for an air core and if the cap is out of spec, replace them with a matched set of oil caps. I picked up 2 pair of 2mfd oils the when combined measured 3.8 and 3.9mfd for I seem to remember $10 off the auction site. The loads Are pretty well sealed against dust and are wire wound. Hard to get a cleaner spray into so, easier to soak them and reinstall. Add a pair of new binding posts and you are good to go. I did not change the wiring. The biggies are the cap and cleaning the control what is what I did.
