Well, I am getting a FREE TEAC A-6010 R2R...

Well, I am getting a free Teac A-6010 within the week probably, and a few r2r and 8track tapes with it. According to the guy, it's in it original box, and it worked when he put it in it's box 5 or 6 years ago.

I was wondering what the general consensus was on these machines, and if there will need to be any work done on it.

I now have an excuse to test out my uncle's Dynaco SCA-35's tape head inputs :music:

UPDATE:

Also comes about 20 prerecorded tapes with it (some NOS), and 10 home made tapes, and about a dozen 8tracks
It does not play in reverse, the left reel does not turn in reverse. Forward, it plays fine.

Anyone ever encountered that problem? I wanted to use the 3.75ips speed and autoreverse for LONG recording times, but that is not too important right now......

It's free, so I cannot complain!

EDIT: Wonder what else he has laying around.....hmm...:D
 
If they are properly maintained (motors oiled etc), that series of Teac decks (I once had the smaller A-4010S) is pretty much bulletproof. If you ever take a look inside at the construction you'll see what I mean. Very robust AC motors, beefy servos...built to last forever.

If the left reel does not turn in reverse, but forward play works fine (with no tape threaded, lift the operation lever to the right of the head stack to activate transport functions, then hit Play to make sure the left reel turns slowly to maintain tension), then something has failed in the logic circuits for reverse playback. My 3300S-2T blew a capacitor and a few diodes on one of the logic boards and behaved very strangely afterwards (would rewind with the brakes engaged). Your deck has probably suffered a less critical circuit failure, if forward play still works fine. Does ANYTHING engage when reverse is selected? My A-4010S had a relay that clicked when reverse play was selected. Perhaps this is the case? Other people will have to chime in about that.

Vinyldavid that sounds awesome. Can't wait to see some pics, I don't know much about this Teac model. Does this deck use the 10" reels, or just the 7" ??

It's a 7" machine, and it has tape head outs, so when I get tubes, I can use the tube tape head amp :yes:

As far as I know, it is one or 2 steps ABOVE the Teac A-4010, which I have heard many good things about....

I just confirmed with the seller that I am picking it up sometime after 5:00 tomorrow....so we will know by the end of tomorrow.

I have already told my English teacher that I would bring it in, because it comes with a reading of Macbeth on reel, among other things, and we are reading Macbeth now.....

I cannot wait to see the looks on people's faces when they see that sucker in the classroom, plus an integrated and some speakers:scratch2:....:D :banana: :thmbsp:

Heck, the other student that uses R2R in the school (yes, there is ONE, and I turned him onto it) will be running it some of the time.....He just does not know it yet. The teacher will keep it safe.
 
No, I think where you need to be concerned is getting it off campus and safely home. Hopefully your classroom is close to the parking lot where a 'getaway' car can be meeting you. That way you won't have to carry it far or be just standing there with it.

Personally, no matter what kind of novelty or coolness factor it might have on your classmates, I myself wouldn't chance it by bringing it in. Even if nothing happens while at school, I don't think it's a good idea to advertise that you have them in the first place. Most schools are very tight communities and it wouldn't be the least bit difficult to establish where they're being kept. And all it takes is one kid with an out-of-work parent to decide to be a family hero to decide to 'ditch' one day. Or worse, meet you just off campus.

But again, that's just me.

This is why I keep my tapes and decks in a seperate location from where I ship my E-bay (and AK tapes) from. Basically my ship from address is little more than a dummy location where I can get and send mail from. But little else.

Just my $.02.

So I take it you won't be needing an X-2000R now, what with all these decks you're getting now?

Like David I was the kid who brought bunches of weird things to school (although never a RTR). Some of the ones that got a bit more attention were my original gameboy (This was last year I brought it in so it got some looks) some of my handheld computers (the my HP 200lx) and even my Nintendo Virtual Boy. Although one that got the most attention was when I brought a Casset play to school last year. I actually had a couple people ask me what it was. I never had a problem with people wanting to take my stuff. (mostly because it was old "junk" in their minds)

And for the X-2000R just send it to me. :D

Well, I know the people in my grade VERY well, and they wouldn't dare touch it. I have had an 8track/radio/speakers setup in a history classroom, and I have not had one problem with it, other than the radio was set to rap....Everyone that knows me, and knows of me, and all my teachers know that I have an amazing audio system, and my address is readily available. The classroom is pretty far from the door, but that is not too big of a deal to me.

And I would love an X-2000R no matter what else I have. :D

Sadly, no one my age even WANTS a reel to reel deck at all......

I still carry the cassette walkman....ninties version...and sixties headphones.
Working on a Sony TC-770 rechargeable 'portable' R2R deck.....
