Yep, they take some getting used to! I find that any adjustment (except for VTA) requires you to re-check everything else. So set-up can be daunting. But if you hang in there they can really pump out great sound.

You haven't said yet whether you've tried Rega's outboard power supply. I don't own one myself (though I did immediately upgrade to the white belt), but every review I've read has found it to make a worthwhile difference. One of the most over-the-top positive comments came from an earlier P3-24 review, but the Stereo Times reviewer mentioned the same sorts of things you seem to be finding with your Elys 2. He found that it "sounds big, bold, vivid, and dynamic," but also has a "slight lack of ultimate refinement and a slight crudity." With the addition of the TT PSU, he wrote, "The cartridge improved to an almost unbelievable degree, becoming fully fluid, refined, and supple, its slight crudity completely gone." If I remember correctly, you bought your RP3 from a local dealer; perhaps he can arrange a demonstration of its effect with your turntable and cartridge to see if that will give you what you're looking for. This should be an in-home demo if what I've read is true that the degree of improvement depends to some extent on how clean the power already is in your home. You haven't had your RP3 very long, and it's a shame that you're already finding it unsatisfactory.

What sort of adjusting do they need compared to a normal table, say a Thorens 318 or Denon 50L? I'm bidding on a used Simplex and wondering how much of a hassle I may be getting myself into if I win it. Other options are either a VPI Travler or Scout or just slap a Jelco arm on my Thorens 318.

Current Well Tempered models are pretty easy to set up, and the Simplex doesn't worry about adjusting things like overhang, alignment, or anti-skate. It looks like you just bolt the cartridge in place and adjust tracking force, vertical tracking angle, and azimuth.
"The Simplex features a head shell that requires no tracking alignment adjustment. We strongly recommend it remains firmly fixed in the correct position as supplied. . . The headshell is fixed ex-factory in the optimum position. There is no provision for over-hang adjustment. Some alignment protractors may well disagree. I read the Simplex manual. Holy crud, that sort of thing just cries out for a YouTube explainer. Unfortunately the only one I saw was in Korean.
I have a WT Classic. It sounds like the Simplex arm is much easier to set-up. The WT design is a great sounding design, so I wouldn't pass on it.
