Welton Pro Audios with 15" woofers...

Friend of mine gave me these "Pro Audio" speakers yesterday because he just wanted them out of his garage. Big, heavy, built like a tank sumbitches. 3 1/2 feet tall with 15" woofers. Took 2 trips to bring them home in the Infiniti.

Decided to give them a try this morning. Dug out an old JVC AX-R97, figuring that a 125 wpc receiver would be fine on a pair of 200 watt 3 way units. Used the JVC cd player and dropped in my reference disk...track 9... Our Lady Peace's "Starseed"....at about 1/3 volume. Poked the SEA button to activate the onboard EQ. Sat down in a chair about 4 feet from them and waited.

The guitar opening was smooth and clean and very sharp. The feedback style roll in to the rest of the song increased in intensity with incredible definition and faded into the first drum strikes...then...

SWEET BABY JESUS ON A POGO STICK!
When the bass section hit I'm certain my vision went blurry. My insides immediately felt like I shouldn't have ate that chili. I believe I felt my mustache hit the back of my neck. There was still fantastic separation of the bass and cymbals and by the 4th or 5th bass strike I'm pretty sure neighbors had wet themselves. When the 2nd lead guitar riff started the skies opened up, the lighting flashed, the thunder rattled and the torrential rain started.

I think I just created a weather control device.

In all seriousness, though...they did sound better than I expected. When I first saw carpeted cabinets I thought "Great...a pair of pre-destroyed D.J. speakers." but I was pleasantly surprised.

Not sure but those may have been available from a rent to own franchise?
If so, you got a way better deal than the original purchaser.

Yeah, Rent-a-Center. Here's a thread on AVS forum from a guy with a similar experience with a different model of Weltons. If I had seen these at a yard sale I wouldn't have given them a second look.

The horn tweeters could be Motorola piezos (ESS used them in their Cannon-TLS line) and can sound halfway decent if they're not crossed over too low, or they could also be a standard compression driver - can't really tell from the pictures posted. It's quite possible that the company that built them had an engineer that knew what s/he was doing, and built the best they could with the budget available (unlike White Van speakers, these probably would have been set up to play in the showroom, so they'd need at least halfway decent sound). Then someone who knew nothing about styling decided they needed carpeting, individual driver grills and fake wood veneer.

Would be interesting to know what kind of drivers are behind all that plastic.

The engineers are well aware of how people are almost forced to push in any dust caps they see. It's animal instinct dating back to the stone age.
The individual driver grilles are just protecting their product in case they get repo'd.
I wonder why they didn't budget another 50 cents to put grilles over the ports?
Insects, rats, snakes, and other small animals go in those ports looking for a place to live.
In addition, children can use them for safe keeping of their most precious small items.

You should do a video plugging them in to AC mains and see how long it takes till they go up in flames.

Sometimes life surprises you. :) look like perfect garage or occasional patio speakers.

They also make the perfect gift for your annoying brother-in-law's teenage kid. Add a ~100 watt disposable AVR and whatever cables are required to hook up the X-box, phone, computer, TV, DVD player, and every other source available for maximum effect ;)

I have seen several variations of those. Some have two 15's in each front baffle. I have seen a single 15" like yours, then bonus top-mounted, side-angle-firing 15" too. Crazy loud things they are, lol. I have only actually heard them on two occasions though- once while delivering I heard a pair indoors being played at "11" (distorted and terrible). The second time they had a pair playing out on the curb in front of rent-a-center. Again, loud and untuned. I am sure they could be made to sound decent, just both times I heard them they were being operated by morons.
